Payroll Technician
Compensation & Representation:
The Payroll Technician is a classified staff member represented by the Classified Administrative Professionals
Association (CAPA) and is compensated according to the CAPA Salary Schedule.
General Summary:
The Payroll Technician is responsible for the accurate and timely processing of payroll for all employees within
the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District. This role supports the Payroll and Benefits Manager and Business
Services, ensuring compliance with federal and state laws, district policies, collective bargaining agreements, and
Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS) reporting.
Essential Job Functions:

● Ensures all deadlines are met
● Performs a variety of accounting functions for accurate entry of pay data for assigned employee groups;
calculates and enters deductions; adjusts accruals and deferrals; processes and monitors overtime,
supplemental, and special pay; makes other payroll calculations
● Updates employee information such as employee status changes; mandatory and voluntary deductions
and benefits; payments and communication with third party administrators
● Prepares pay warrants, payroll reports and other correspondence for employees, buildings and
administrators
● Responds to and resolves employee payroll-related questions and requests; provides assistance to
employees in understanding their pay
● Maintains various payroll procedures and guidelines according to district policies, state and federal
regulations, and collective bargaining agreements
● Supports payroll operations by monitoring workflow and identifying training needs to recommend
improvements in efficiency and accuracy.
● Assists in evaluating training needs and offers recommendations to enhance team efficiency and accuracy
● Coordinates closely with Human Resources and Finance for data alignment
● Provides assistance and backup to payroll team members
● Comply with all applicable laws, rules, and authoritative guidance
● Maintains up-to-date knowledge of payroll laws and best practices
● Supports year-end processes including tax filing and W-2 generation
● Participates in department and district meetings
● Works collaboratively within the professional learning community of the school and district

● Reports to work with regular and reliable attendance and punctuality
● Upholds board policy, district and building policies and goals
● Performs related duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications:
● High school diploma or GED
● Minimum of two (2) years of payroll experience or related experience in accounting, finance, human
resources, or benefits administration, preferably in a school district, government agency, or similar
organization with complex payroll processes
● Proficiency in spreadsheets and common business systems
Preferred Qualifications:
● Associate degree in Accounting or a related field
● Five years of general payroll experience in a school district or large organization
● Payroll certification from Washington Association of School Business Officials (WASBO) or similar
● Knowledge of Washington State Department of Retirement Services (DRS), Fair Labor Standards Act
(FLSA), Washington Administrative Codes (WACs)/Revised Codes of Washington (RCWs)
● Experience and/or training with cultural, ethnic, and language diversity
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
● Knowledge of state and federal law governing payroll
● Knowledge of general office procedures and equipment, plus the ability to use a personal computer and
computer software
● Requires a high degree of accuracy and ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure
● Excellent organizational, recordkeeping, and communication skills
● Leadership skills that demonstrate ability to respond positively and constructively to diverse customer
needs
● Demonstrates ability to learn new procedures and software systems, with the ability to model creative
and flexible problem-solving approaches
● Exhibits multicultural and ethnic understanding and sensitivity with the capability to communicate
effectively with all cultural groups in the Sumner-Bonney Lake School District.

Working Conditions:
Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities. Inspects
school or district facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site is suitable for safe operations, maintained in

an attractive and clean condition, and/or identifying necessary repairs due to vandalism, equipment breakage,
weather conditions, etc.
Occasional exposure to weather. Moderate physical demand, occasionally required to lift and carry objects
weighing up to twenty-five (25) pounds and push/pull with up to twenty-five (25) pounds of force. Must be able to
walk up to 500 feet at a time and climb stairs as needed.
The District operates on a fiscal year from September 1st through August 31st. Those employees who do not
work the full year are paid over a 12-month period. This means that during the school year the monthly pay
warrants will be approximately 1/12 of the school year earnings, which allows the employee to receive a pay
warrant during the summer months.
