Job Description

Mechanics on site provide safe, reliable maintenance and repair of heavy equipment, vehicles, and generators in a remote camp environment, including diagnostics, preventive maintenance, and support for daily site operations.

 

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Safety

  • Exercise stop-work authority when necessary
  • Complete Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and risk assessments for each job
  • Participate in daily tool box meetings and weekly safety meetings
  • Comply with on-site safety programs
  • Adhere to the company's hazard communication program for on-site hazardous chemicals.

Mechanical

  • Conduct general maintenance of heavy equipment, light equipment, generators, passenger vehicles and ATV's
  • Diagnose and repair all safety-related defects on vehicles and equipment
  • Performs routine and preventive maintenance including oil changes and tune-ups.
  • Performs tests on specific parts and systems to confirm proper mechanical function; ensures that all critical parts are examined.
  • Identifies mechanical problems either visually or with computer diagnostic equipment.
  • Examines critical parts and systems using a standard checklist.
  • Repairs or replaces malfunctioning parts and systems such as brake pads, belts, water pumps, transmissions, and other mechanical parts.
  • Plans and establishes timetable to complete repairs and maintenance.
  • Visits job sites to inspect vehicles.
  • Test drives vehicle to confirm safe and proper operation.
  • Maintain inventory control on all parts and fluids
  • Ensure tools and equipment are in good operating order
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Communication

  • Report all safety, environmental and security incidents to site management immediately. Complete incident reports

QUALFICATIONS

Education and training

  • Valid Driver License required. (Alaska residents >90 days must have a valid Alaska Driver License)
  • Heavy Equipment Repair, Diesel Technician or related training (documented), certificate or diploma strongly preferred

Experience and Skills

Level 1

  • A minimum of 1 year of experience maintaining modern diesel engines, gas engines, hydraulic and air systems.
  • Experience or training with arc welding and gas cutting/welding is an asset.

Level 2

  • A minimum of 2-5 years of experience maintaining modern diesel engines, gas engines, hydraulic and air systems.
  • Experience with diagnostic procedures and diagnostic software.
  • Proficient with arc and wireline welding and gas cutting/welding.

Level 3

  • A minimum of 6 years of experience maintaining modern diesel engines, gas engines, hydraulic and air systems.
  • Proficient in the use of diagnostic procedures and diagnostic software.
  • Expert in arc and wireline welding and gas cutting/welding.

All Levels

  • Ability to work effectively in a team setting
  • Extensive knowledge of all aspects of vehicle repair
  • Good mechanical repair skills
  • Good analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals, labels, instruction manuals and Safety Data Sheets as well as to record daily notes and shared logs
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to change
  • Knowledge of and ability to carry out safe remote operational procedures
  • Ability to deal tactfully with camp staff, contractors and visitors
  • Ability to follow instructions effectively and in a timely manner
  • Ability to perform heavy work, exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
  • Ability to work for long periods in a remote location

 

This is a seasonal position, expected to work from April to October, with a rotational schedule.
