Job Title: Groundskeeper
Division: Fluvanna County Public Schools
Salary Index: Maintenance Pay Band, 12 month position
Reports To: Maintenance Supervisor and Athletic Director
SUMMARY: Assists in overall maintenance of school property, focusing on athletic fields, mowing, athletic field prep (lining, grooming), landscaping (watering, fertilizing, planting, pruning), pest/weed control, snow removal, equipment operation (mowers, tractors, blowers), minor building upkeep, and ensuring grounds are safe, clean, and functional for students and events, often requiring heavy physical labor and operating various hand/power tools.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Maintains athletic fields by grooming turf, marking lines, painting surfaces, managing irrigation systems, and preparing fields for events.
- Performs mowing, edging, watering, fertilizing, aerating, seeding, planting, mulching, and weeding of lawns, flower beds, shrubs, and trees.
- Applies fertilizers, herbicides, and insecticides in accordance with training, safety standards, and licensure requirements. Performs seasonal tasks such as leaf removal, mulching, and planting of grass, flowers, shrubs, and trees.
- Conducts regular inspections of school division facilities to support preventive maintenance efforts.
- Safely operates and maintains a variety of equipment, including mowers, tractors, chainsaws, blowers, sprayers, trucks, and other hand and power tools.
- Removes litter and debris, maintains outdoor furniture, cleans drainage systems, and performs minor repairs to grounds equipment.
- Performs snow and ice removal, including plowing, shoveling, sanding, and salting of walkways, roads, and parking areas.
- Supports building maintenance and custodial teams as an essential employee and performs other related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED);
- Maintenance-related experience preferred and/or trade licenses and certifications
LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: High school diploma or GED equivalency, and hold a valid Virginia driver's license.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to the risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12-month contract. Shifts may vary based on the needs of the division.
EVALUATION: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations on the evaluation of classified personnel.
