Job Description

GENERAL PURPOSE: The Youth Recreation Umpire/Scorekeeper is responsible for maintaining an accurate, real-time record of scores, statistics, fouls, time, and other game elements during recreational sports events. This role may also include officiating youth t-ball, baseball, and softball games. The position supports fair play and enhances the participant and spectator experience in youth and adult leagues or tournaments. Individuals hired for this role may be scheduled to perform both scorekeeping and umpiring duties as needed. The position requires attention to detail, knowledge of basic sports rules, and the ability to work outdoors or indoors in various weather conditions.

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific duties. 

  • Keep an accurate running score of the game, recording points, runs, goals, or other scoring events as they occur.
  • Operate manual scorebooks, updating scores, fouls, time-outs, possession arrows (e.g., in basketball), and other relevant statistics.
  • Manage the game clock: start, stop, and track time according to league rules (including periods, halves, overtime, or innings).
  • Track player and team statistics such as fouls, personal fouls, technical fouls, strikes/balls/outs (in baseball/softball), hits, errors, player eligibility, substitutions, and penalties.
  • Serve as an umpire for youth t-ball, baseball, and softball games, enforcing rules, making fair and consistent calls, and ensuring a safe and positive playing environment.
  • Communicate effectively with game officials, coaches, players, and supervisors regarding scores, rule interpretations, or discrepancies.
  • Report any emergencies, injuries, rule violations, or concerns to the supervisor immediately.
  • Prepare facilities/equipment before games (e.g., set up score table, scoreboard, field prep if needed) and clean up/secure equipment after events.
  • Enforce recreation program rules and maintain a professional, customer-service-oriented demeanor with participants and spectators.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned (e.g., light facility supervision, assisting with check-ins, or announcing scores in some roles).

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: 

Education/Experience:

  • No formal certification required in most cases, though some leagues may provide basic training for scorekeeping and youth umpiring.

Knowledge/Skills:

  • Basic understanding of common recreational sports rules (e.g., basketball, softball, volleyball).
  • Working knowledge or willingness to learn rules for youth t-ball, baseball, and softball umpiring.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to multitask under pressure in a fast-paced environment.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain neutral, confident, and professional during games.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods (often outdoors), move around playing fields/courts, work in varying weather conditions, and occasionally lift light equipment (scorebooks, timers, etc.)

Other:

  • Reliable attendance; flexible schedule (evenings, weekends, and occasional weekdays for games/tournaments). Background check may be required for youth programs.
