Job Description

About the Department

Under supervision, the Aquatics Aide performs customer service tasks at an aquatics public counter, including providing information to the public and completing online registrations for patrons. The Aquatics Aide also acts as a locker room attendant and monitors locker rooms and secured pool supply areas. This is an excellent entry-level opportunity for those with a passion for the field of recreation and aquatics or an interest in public service!

  • No experience required.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule including weekends, holidays and/or on-call status is essential.

Saturday, May 9th (8:30am - 5:30pm), and

*All dates in the training series are mandatory. Training hours may vary, and the format will include a combination of virtual and in-person sessions)

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: (All responsibilities may not be performed by all incumbents.)

  • Provides aquatics public counter customer service functions including: providing information and assistance at aquatics public counter; answering phones; receiving and receipting fees and taking registration information; creating and distributing brochures, flyers, etc.; and completing cash reports.
  • Checks in patrons entering the pool area.
  • Assists with registering patrons for aquatics programs.
  • May assist with the instruction of swimming lessons and exercise classes.
  • Monitors locker room; checks property in and out; and performs locker room attendant duties assigned.
  • Enforces proper patron conduct by communicating pool health and safety regulations. 
  • May respond to emergency situations in an aquatic environment.
  • Performs cleaning and light maintenance duties, as needed.
IMPORTANT JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Provides direct assistance and customer service functions to general public and patrons.
  • Monitors and inspects pool areas and locker rooms.
  • Reports safety concerns and hazards.
  • Assists with setting up staffing equipment during events and monitoring inventory.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED (desirable)
  • No prior experience is required.
Licenses and Certifications:
  • CPR/First Aid/AED Certification (must attain within three months of hire)
     
    NOTE: The City of West Hollywood Recreation Services Division will provide the certification courses to qualified, passing candidates.  Employment is contingent upon successful completion of the required certifications.

  • Basic operations, services and activities of recreation programs, activities and events. 
  • Basic maintenance and repair of equipment.
  • First aid and CPR.

  • Using tact, discretion, initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Performing routine cleaning and small repairs as directed on all assigned equipment.
Abilities:
  • Ability to communicate in English both orally and in writing at the appropriate level.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operation and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations at the appropriate level.
  • Ability to learn to use a computer to perform the essential and important job functions.
  • Ability to learn and follow City and departmental policies and procedures.
While performing the essential functions of this job, the incumbent is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects; ascend and descend stairs; maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, crouching, or running; move about on hands and knees; bend body downward and forward, requiring full use of the lower extremities and back muscles; reach with hands and arms; speak and hear; and push, pull and/or lift up to 10 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
 
Working Conditions:
  • Work is performed in a normal office environment and at recreation facilities (parks/pools) where there may be extreme temperatures, exposure to sun, dirt and/or dust.
  • The incumbent's working conditions are typically moderately loud.
  • Working time requires irregular hours, various shifts, weekends, holidays and/or on-call status.
