    General Definition of Work: Performs complex professional and administrative work in the administration and supervision of middle school and its programs, and related work as apparent or assigned.  The Middle School Principal will coordinate administrative oversight and plan all phases of instructional leadership for the school including educational programming, administration, budgetary planning, and discipline and counseling services. Supervision is exercised over all school personnel.

     

    Supervisory Responsibilities: Oversees the daily management of the school and office. Oversees educators in the school, providing periodic observations and evaluations that are timely and constructive and completed based on the timetables set by the school division. Offers additional training and guidance as necessary based on evaluations of professional staff; participates in the selection and supervision of all school building personnel.

    • Ensure a productive learning environment through continual collaboration with teachers, students, and parents.
    • Coordinate staff development for faculty and staff; provide instruction and training as needed.
    • Facilitate opportunities to connect with students by being present and available during arrival and dismissal, by appearing at school functions, and by meeting with students.
    • Establish and maintain an effective learning climate in the school; provide for the efficient conduct of school instruction and business.
    • Schedule classes within established guidelines to meet students' needs.
    • Maintain competency and student academic achievement as prescribed by the school board.
    • Enforce disciplinary policies and procedures with students.
    • Participate in parent meetings and conferences and act as liaison between parents, teachers, and students to deal with a variety of needs or issues.
    • Ensure completion of routine and required paperwork including attendance reports, test results, and licensing information for students, educators, staff, and school management.
    • Evaluate the performance of all staff.
    • Maintain high standards of student conduct and enforce discipline as necessary, according to School Board policy and the due process rights of students.
    • Identify the special needs of students on a regular basis, seeking the assistance of school system specialists as required.
    • Attend special events held to recognize student achievement; attend school sponsored activities, functions and athletic events; maintain and control the various local funds generated by student activities.
    • Supervise the maintenance of accurate records on the progress and attendance of students.
    • Ensure that necessary maintenance and repairs to the school property are performed.
    • Oversee the allocation of supplies and equipment.
    • Oversee and implement the school budget, approving new programs and expenditures as appropriate.
    • Represent the school in community activities and meetings.
    • Interact with various stakeholders to foster a positive relationship between the school and community including the PTA, community organizations, and leaders.
    • Collaborate with other principals and educators throughout the school division to choose and develop curriculum and textbooks that align with local, state, and national standards.
    • Assume responsibility for the implementation and observance of all Board policies and regulations by the school's staff and students; interpret and enforce school division's policies and regulations.
    • Create a school culture and climate conducive for learning and working.
    • Perform other related duties as assigned.

    • Proficient skills with Microsoft Office Suite or related software.

     

    Education and Experience: Master's in Education and School Administrator License required. School Administrative experience is strongly preferred. The successful candidate needs at least five years of teaching experience required and must possess the appropriate license(s), certificate(s), and/or endorsement(s) for the position as required by the Commonwealth of Virginia and School Board. Possession of an appropriate driver's license valid in the Commonwealth of Virginia and the ability to operate motor vehicles

     

    Evaluation: Performance on this job will be evaluated in accordance with school board policy and administrative regulations of classified personnel.

    Human Interaction: Requires the ability to maintain a cordial and effective relationship with visitors and clients. Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of equipment, machinery, tools, and/or materials used in performing essential functions. 

    Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive, and/or advisory data and information. 

    Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; ability to calculate decimals and percentages as needed; may require ability to utilize principles of fractions and/or interpret graphs as needed. 

    Functional Reasoning: Requires the ability to exercise independent judgment to apply facts and principles for developing approaches and techniques to problem resolution. 

     

     

    Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:

    Physical Ability: Tasks involve the ability to exert physical effort in frequent standing, walking, sitting and repetitive motions at the work site daily, but which may involve some lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of light weight (up to 25 pounds). Tasks may involve extended periods of time standing or sitting

     

    Sensory Requirements: Some tasks require visual perception and discrimination; Hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; Tasks require strong communications ability.

     

    Environmental Factors:  This is an on-site position. Tasks are regularly performed with exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations, electric currents, traffic hazards, animals/wildlife, toxic/poisonous agents, violence, disease, or pathogenic substances. Work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, playground, classroom, light traffic.
