Job Description

Purpose of Position:

The Summercise Assistant provides crucial support to the Summercise Program, an initiative designed to mentor local people to be community wellness advocates. Through participation in a fitness and nutrition education program for youth in the region, assistants play a vital role in shaping the health and well-bring of our community’s young people.

Essential Functions:

  • Collaborate and assist summer interns to teach engaging physical fitness activities and informative health education sessions to community participants enrolled in the Summercise program

 

  • Assist in all stages of program implementation, including preparation of materials, promotion within the community and the successful execution of the program components

 

  • Support the delivery of interactive education classes and engaging health activities
     for program participants. Including cooking and nutrition classes, classes and
     physical activities taking place outdoors and various location within the city limits of
     Nome, Alaska including but not limited to: City of Nome Swimming Pool, Nome-Beltz
     High School, NACTEC Learning House, Nome Elementary School, Swanberg
     Dredge/East Beach, Nome Recreation Center, Anvil Mountain , Foster Building,
     Norton Sound Health Corporation.
  • Serve as a positive and encouraging role model for children enrolled in the program and community members. Interact with children and their parents for smooth implementation of the program.
  • Actively participate in team meetings and planning sessions with CAMP staff, providing support for the implementation and wrap-up of the Summercise Program
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Required Knowledge:

  • Knowledge and experience working with children and youth. 
  • Use and access to email for job-related communications and requirements
  • Use and access of a cellular device, especially text messaging capabilities for communication

  • Must be physically active and able to maintain high energy and enthusiasm for the entire 4 hour program each day. 
  • Strong preference will be given to candidates who are current high school students (9th grade or higher)

Minimum Requirements

 

Grade 0:

Degree – High School Student or Graduate

Experience – 0 years, Experience working with kids preferred

Credentials – CPR within one month of hire

 

Grade 1:

Degree – High School Student or Graduate

Experience – 1 year experience working with kids required

Credentials – CPR within one month of hire

 

Grade2 :

Degree – High School Student or Graduate

Experience – 2 years’ experience working with kids required

Credentials – CPR within one month of hire

 

Grade 2:

Degree – High School Student or Graduate, 16 years of age and older

Experience – 1 year experience leading activities and supervising kids, 1 year experience as Summercise Assistant preferred

Credentials – CPR within one month of hire

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Stand and/or walk, active and moving most of the workday
  • Use hands and arms for repetitive motion tasks
  • Lift or carry unaided up to 50 pounds
  • Push or pull using up to moderate force

 

Working Conditions:

∙Work is conducted in an environment conducive to child focused activities this may to include exposure to latex.

No travel is required

Work may be conducted outside in less than ideal weather conditions (not severe weather).
