About Shepherd Electric Supply
Since 1892, Shepherd Electric Supply has been the first call when complex, time-critical electrical challenges need to be solved, and reliability truly matters. We move materials accurately and on time, so contractors stay on schedule, projects stay on track, and customers never have to wonder if we will come through.
Our success comes from people who take pride in doing things the right way — safely, accurately, and with care for teammates and customers alike. If you want to do work that matters at a company that notices, this is the place.
Why This Role Matters
The Receiving Department is where Shepherd’s supply chain begins. Every product that reaches a customer, every order that leaves the building accurately, and every inventory count that holds up under scrutiny traces back to how well receiving runs — and how well the people in that department execute.
When inbound freight is received correctly, exceptions are caught at the dock — not discovered later — and inventory accuracy is protected from the moment materials enter the building. This role is not just about moving boxes. It is about making sure every piece that comes in is counted, verified, and entered right so the rest of the operation can execute with confidence.
If you take pride in accuracy, move with purpose, and understand that getting it right the first time is always faster than fixing it later, this role was written for you.
How This Role Connects to Our Compass
We Keep Our Promises:
You receive every shipment like the inventory count depends on it — because it does. When something is off, you flag it before it enters the system, not after. Errors caught at the dock stay at the dock.
We Stay Hungry:
You are always looking for a faster, cleaner way to process inbound freight without cutting corners on accuracy. You notice when something takes longer than it should and you say something.
We Grow Together:
You cross-train, communicate across departments, and understand that when the receiving dock runs well, everyone else’s job gets easier. You are part of the chain, not the end of it.
We Own It:
You do not wait to be told when something is wrong. If a shipment is short, a package is damaged, or a count does not match — you own it. You document it, report it, and follow it through to resolution.
We Go Above & Beyond:
You do not just process what is on the truck. You check it, stage it, and make sure the next person in the chain has exactly what they need. You see what is coming and prepare accordingly.
Key Outcomes
Organized by what matters, not just what you do.
Inbound Receiving & Freight Accuracy
- Receive all inbound freight accurately — count, verify, and confirm every shipment against purchase orders before accepting
- Document overages, shortages, and damages at the point of receipt — never allow discrepancies to enter the system unresolved
- Process received product into the system accurately and promptly so inventory reflects reality
- Operate sit-down and stand-up forklifts to unload trucks safely and stage freight in designated locations
- Label and organize received product for efficient put-away so the warehouse team can locate and pull orders without delays
Documentation & System Accuracy
- Enter all received freight into the warehouse management system accurately and on time
- Maintain organized receiving logs and exception documentation that support traceability and audit readiness
- Verify purchase order quantities and item descriptions match physical receipts before closing out transactions
- Flag recurring vendor discrepancies to the Warehouse Manager for review and resolution
- Communicate clearly with purchasing and warehouse leadership when expected deliveries are delayed or incomplete
Put-Away & Inventory Integrity
- Put away received product into correct bin locations so inventory counts remain accurate and product is findable
- Participate in cycle counts and physical inventory as directed — treat discrepancies as signals, not nuisances
- Keep the receiving area organized, labeled, and clear so inbound flow never backs up and product does not get misplaced
- Report bin location issues or mislabeled product to the Warehouse Manager before errors compound
Equipment Operation & Safety
- Operate sit-down and stand-up forklifts safely and in compliance with certification requirements — no exceptions
- Follow all safety guidelines and proper lifting techniques — protect yourself, your teammates, and the product
Team Support & Communication
- Communicate clearly with warehouse associates, purchasing, and leadership when inbound exceptions require attention
- Cross-train in additional warehouse functions to increase flexibility and support team coverage
- Step up to support other warehouse functions during high-volume periods without being directed
Process Improvement & Standards
- Identify receiving inefficiencies and surface them to your supervisor — act on what you can, escalate what you cannot
- Maintain a clean, organized receiving dock — a well-run receiving area prevents delays across the entire warehouse operation
- Support process improvements that make receiving faster, more accurate, or easier for the team to sustain
What Success Looks Like
After 90 days, you and your supervisor should both be able to point to these markers:
- Inbound freight is received accurately — exceptions are documented and resolved before end of day, never left for the next shift
- Inventory is accurate — what is in the system matches what is on the shelf, and you know where everything landed
- The receiving dock is clean, organized, and running without bottlenecks — freight does not sit waiting
- Forklifts and equipment are operated safely every shift — no safety shortcuts, no unreported issues
- The Warehouse Manager trusts that receiving runs correctly without close supervision
- Teammates and other departments describe you as someone who is dependable, accurate, and easy to work with
Who Thrives Here
This role is a strong fit if:
- You take accuracy seriously — you would rather slow down to get it right than move fast and create a problem downstream
- You flag problems early instead of hoping they work out — you understand that a discrepancy caught at the dock is far easier to resolve than one found in inventory
- You are steady, dependable, and organized — you show up on time, work at a consistent pace, and do not need someone watching to do things right
- You communicate clearly with your team and supervisors — you speak up when something is off and follow through when you say you will
- You take pride in work that is invisible when done right — the product just arrives, counted correctly, in the right place, ready to go
