Job Title: Coach/Sponsor
Reports to: Athletic Director and Building Principal
Terms of Employment: This position is in accordance with the MSHSAA calendar for the season. Consistent and regular attendance is an essential function of this position.
Purpose: This position is responsible for coaching student athletes in game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. Position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation of the sport while creating positive relationships with students.
Qualifications: MSHAA requires a teaching certification in any area or a 4 year degree with fundamentals of coaching plus maintain other MHSAA required courses yearly. Establish and maintain membership in a professional coaching association.
Performance Responsibilities:
- Know, understand and abide by the rules and regulations and the policies and procedures of the School District and perform all duties accordingly. Adheres to the District Athletic Department Philosophy.
- Attends and participates in all district necessary meetings and training.
- Schedules athletic meetings for team prospects and motivates potential athletes to take part in the sport.
- Maintains team eligibility forms, emergency information cards, insurance records, equipment inventory, and other related records.
- Takes all precautions to protect and maintain district equipment, uniforms, supplies, and facilities
- Displays and maintains enthusiasm and good sportsmanship toward students, colleagues, officials, spectators, the sport, and the school. Conducts oneself to represent the school well.
- Assess each players level of skill and designates team positions
- Assemble a regular team practice schedule and arrange practice time for growth individual and development
- Collaborates with the Athletic Director when scheduling facilities for practices and competitions/games
- Allocates duties to assistant coach/coaches as needed
- Instructs players individually or as a team regarding the techniques, regulations, rules, and equipment
- Observes team players during practice and competition to determine the improvement needs for individual and team athletes
- Evaluates teams capabilities to determine game strategy
- Displays non discriminatory practices
- Demonstrates and supports standards of discipline as well as provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
- Discusses with parents/guardians as needed regarding athletic performance of their student
- Follows state, conference, and district regulations governing over the athletic program
- Abides by standard procedures following the event of an athletes injury
- Displays and maintains enthusiasm and good sportsmanship towards players, officials, and spectators
- Monitors teams academic performance to ensure athletic eligibility requirements are met. Encourages team athletes to set and maintain high academic standards
- Represents the school and the team well by communicating with the media or other organizations.
- Communicates with the Athletic Director to develop a policy for awards and submits a list of awards and winners to the Athletic Director at the end of the season.
- Participates and is present for special activities to include pep assemblies, fundraisers, parent’s night, banquets, and award nights.
