About the Department

****Applicants seeking short-term or part-time work with the University Hawai'i may apply for Casual Hire positions, which include administrative, professional, and technical (APT) or instructional-type positions. Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular BOR and Civil Service employees such as paid leave and holidays. Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.****

Schedule:  Monday to Friday, up to 40 hours/week

Other Conditions: Renewal of position contingent upon needs of department and availability of funds.
  
Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Work on complex technical or specialty area problems reflecting sound judgment and analysis.
  2. Develop front-end user interfaces for new STAR web applications using Java/JavaScript/Angular/CSS/HTML framework and maintain existing STAR software.
  3. Work semi independently, in tandem with back-end developers and as part of a team, all with minimal supervision.
  4. Other duties as assigned.


Minimum Qualifications:

  1. As typically acquired/evidenced by pertinent baccalaureate educational degree in Computer Science and 1 year(s) of progressively responsible professional information technology experience with responsibilities for software development; possession of the following competencies in technical knowledge, critical thinking skills, communication skills and interpersonal skills.
  2. Experience and functional knowledge of higher education student registration software, as well as scheduling software development, demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply principles, concepts, methodology and terminology.
  3. Experience and functional knowledge and understanding of technology, systems, hardware and software associated with student registration software and scheduling software development.
  4. Demonstrated ability to recognize problems, identify possible causes and resolve routine problems.
  5. Demonstrated ability to understand oral and written documentation, write reports and procedures, and communicate effectively in a variety of situations.
  6. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  7. Experience and functional knowledge in HTML, CSS, Javascript, Java, jQuery and AJAX.
  8. Experience and functional knowledge of version control tools such as CVS, SVN or GIT.
  9. Experience and functional knowledge in modern IDEs
  10. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  11. Experience and functional knowledge in Web Video production using DaVinci Resolve.
  12. Experience in Web Video production using CapCut.
  13. Experience and functional knowledge in GUI design and Tomcat.
  14. Experience and functional knowledge of open source frameworks (Angular).
  15. Experience and functional knowledge in Adobe Creative Suite After Effects and Photoshop.
  16. Experience and functional knowledge and understanding of creating documentation for AI chatbots.


Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate of science educational degree in Computer Science.
  2. Experience and functional knowledge and understanding of technology, systems, hardware and software associated with STAR software development.
  3. Experience and functional knowledge of STAR GPS, Direct Admit and Balance software development demonstrated by knowledge, understanding and ability to apply principles, concepts, methodology and terminology.
  4. Experience and functional working knowledge of all STAR software; including, but not limited to Direct Admit, Balance, Academic Logic, Scholarship Set Up & Access, Userve, Giving Tree and STAR GPS.
  5. Entry level experience and functional knowledge in SQL programming & debugging of STAR software.
