The Cast Glass Apprentice supports the production of hand-cast artisan glass lighting products by assisting in daily hot shop operations, furnace preparation, and material processing. This role focuses on developing foundational glassmaking skills while leading and contributing to consistent productivity, quality standards, and safe shop practices.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND JOB REQUIREMENTS:
- Learn, assist, and lead teams in all cast glass hot shop processes and product production.
- Charge (fill) casting and blowing furnaces with prepared glass materials throughout the day.
- Perform daily hot shop startup procedures, including lighting equipment at 5:00 AM.
- Prepare and sort recycled glass materials for furnace charging and decorative additives (frit).
- Support mold preparation, casting setup, and general production workflow.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of work areas, tools, molds, and materials.
- Learn annealing processes, including monitoring furnace temperatures and cycle timing.
- Follow all safety procedures and contribute to a safe working environment.
- Perform additional duties as assigned to support production needs.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
· High School Diploma or GED required.
· 0–1 years of glassmaking or related hands-on experience preferred, but not required.
· Interest in artisan manufacturing, glassmaking, or hands-on craft work is a plus.
QUALIFICATIONS:
· Strong willingness to learn and develop new skills in handmade glass production.
· Motivated to meet productivity goals while maintaining high-quality standards.
· Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.
· Problem-solving mindset with adaptability to variable production conditions.
· Physically capable of lifting and handling materials up to 60 lbs.
· Reliable, punctual, and consistent attendance is essential.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Work is performed primarily in a hot shop environment with elevated temperatures, open flames, and industrial equipment.
- Role requires frequent standing, bending, lifting, hand and wrist movement.
- Exposure to heat and physically demanding conditions is expected.
