The Iowa Department of Natural Resources has a unique and exciting position available within the Field Services and Compliance Bureau, Field Office 5, located in Des Moines, Iowa.   Within this position you will be involved in furthering the DNR’s mission to conserve and enhance our natural resources in the southcentral Iowa region, by supporting the compliance assistance and enforcement team with work to complete data entry related to the drinking water, wastewater, hazardous condition spills, animal feeding operations and other environmental regulatory programs. This role will track submission of monthly monitoring reports and assist regulated industries and municipalities with reporting questions.  

The position will lead administrative support duties for the FO5 team, including assistance with overseeing service contracts, purchasing, invoicing, customer support activities, records management, equipment inventory and management support of state vehicles assigned to the field office.    Duties also include processing incoming and outcoming mail and correspondence, recording files, both paper and electronic, in accordance with retention schedules, scanning and digitizing paper files, assisting staff with file retrieval and responding to open records requests from the public.  The position will prepare routine field office reports for review and approval, and will draft, review and proof correspondence, reports, meeting minutes and other documentation for recording and distribution.  


The position will provide customer service by receiving incoming phone calls, greeting visitors, responding to routine inquiries to provide information and directing individuals to appropriate staff. The position will assist with scheduling appointments, meetings and conferences for staff, and will provide administrative assistance to the field office supervisor and other support staff as required.


Essential Functions

Fundamental aspects of this role are to establish and maintain effective working relationships with DNR staff, customers, clients and the general public.   Effective use of computer systems and electronic database and software adeptly to write documents, produce reports and track projects is required.  Requires organization and management of multiple priorities and projects, and filing and maintaining public records in accordance with policy.   Infrequent travel is required.

The starting salary for new state (Executive Branch) employees is expected to be at the base of the pay range. Additional salary increases may occur after the first six months, and then annually (if applicable). Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:  

  1. One year of full-time work experience in general office, clerical, data entry/processing, or related work.
  2. A total of one year of education and/or full-time experience (as described in number one), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university coursework in any field equals one year of full-time experience.
  3. Current, continuous experience in the state executive branch that includes six months of full-time work as an Administrative Support Assistant 1.
