TEACHER ASSISTANT- GENERAL

  • Unofficial transcripts reflecting at least 48 college credits or associate's degree or higher

  • High School Transcript or Diploma

 

GENERAL PURPOSE

Performs responsible instructional support and paraprofessional work assisting classroom teachers by working with individual students or small groups; does related work as required.  Work is performed under immediate supervision.

 

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Assists teacher(s) with instructional activities; assists students to reinforce material already presented through special efforts and repetitions; prepares and maintains files and reports.

  • Assists classroom teacher(s) in performing specific duties as assigned or undertaking specialized tasks;

  • Assists in providing individual and small-group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils' intellectual abilities;

  • Assists in establishing and maintaining standards of students behavior;

  • Prepares instructional materials; reads to students;

  • Assists classroom teacher(s) in creating an environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students;

  • Helps plan daily and long-range lessons and classroom activities;

  • Conducts learning exercises with small groups of students or individual students;

  • Instructs students on use of computer software; prepares lesson plans;

  • Teaches keyboarding skills; helps students with problem solving and language skills;

  • Alerts teacher(s) to special needs of individual students;

  • Provides escort and assistance to children as necessary; assists with fire drills and other building safety procedures as needed;

  • Scores required tests for reading and mathematics and enters data into computer;

  • Checks students’ work for compliance with teacher's instructions;

  • Assists students with reading, spelling and handwriting skills;

  • Helps maintain individual records for each student;

  • Collects and displays suitable material for educational displays; prepares displays; decorates classroom;

  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities;

  • Assists students in physical activities; to include escorting children to the library, playground activities, lunchroom breaks, resource classes, restrooms, and field trips. 

  • Assists in implementing all policies and rules governing student life and conduct and carries out daily routine tasks;

  • Helps maintain order in the classroom; monitors students to keep them on tasks;

  • Performs a variety of office assistant tasks such as photocopying, filing, answering the telephone, etc. as required;

  • Operates the student supply store; places orders; takes inventory;

  • Selects and checks out library materials for teacher's use;

  • Functions as substitute to cover classes when necessary.

  • Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school.

  • 48 hours of college credits or successful completion of the Parapro test

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • General knowledge of the practices, methods and techniques used in classroom teaching; ability to maintain confidential files and information and to compile reports; ability to deal effectively with students and teachers; 

  • Skill in the use of classroom and instructional equipment; 

  • Ability to operate standard office, Word, and data processing equipment; 

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with teachers, parents, students and associates.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Work environment is primarily inside, where the noise and temperature levels are moderate; the worker is not subject to adverse environmental conditions;

  • Requires frequent walking, stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, kneeling, and sitting; repetitive fingering and grasping;

  • Ability to respond to emergency situations as needed;

  • Ability to lift/push/pull to 20 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds rarely;

  • Ability to speak, see, hear, talk, read, and write to effectively express or exchange ideas with others; 

  • Timely and reliable attendance and adherence to an established work schedule is essential to this position.
