Job Description


Title:  Pharmacy Technician Certified 



Reporting Relationship:  Pharmacy Manager



General Summary of Responsibilities:A Certified Pharmacy Technician assists the Pharmacy Manager in providing high quality pharmaceutical care by ordering, stocking, compounding, distributing, and billing for medications.  They must safely and efficiently compound sterile products (if certified) according to practice standards under the supervision of the Pharmacy Manager.  This employee must also track the viability of the medications in the pharmacy, including storage conditions and expiration dating.  A Certified Pharmacy Technician must interact professionally with patients, visitors, and staff, and maintain patient confidentiality at all times.



Essential Job Functions:  




  1. Properly stores medications in accordance with The Joint Commission (TJC) and legal standards, including temperature control, physical location, and security.

  2. Tracks pharmaceutical stock, anticipates needed drugs, and orders medications

  3. Monitors pharmacy, crash carts, and Omnicells for medications that will expire.  Quarantines and replaces expiring drugs.

  4. Ensures medication availability by tracking and evaluating electronic medication dispensing software, and appropriately delivering drugs to hospital departments.

  5. Tracks and adjusts pharmacy vaccine inventory in Nebraska State Immunization Information System (NESIIS).  Reports this information to the State of Nebraska on a monthly basis.    

  6. Compounds non-sterile products, including oral and topical preparations.  Maintains accurate records and prepares appropriate labels.

  7. Processes records of medications administered to patients and applies charges appropriately

  8. Updates drug pricing based on the most current average wholesale price (AWP)           

  9. Assists pharmacist in calculating figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations.

  10. Uses proper technique to don appropriate personal protective equipment, clean the compounding aseptic isolator, and prepare drug containers before sterile compounding (if Sterile Compounding Certified).

  11. If full-time, uses sterile technique to compound sterile preparations under the supervision of the pharmacy manager (if Sterile Compounding Certified).  Maintains accurate records and prepares appropriate labels.

  12. Passes an annual media fill test to ensure continued sterile technique (if Sterile Compounding Certified).

  13. Properly stores medications in accordance with current accreditation and legal standards

  14. Uses appropriate precautions when handling potentially hazardous drugs and chemicals

  15. Maintains patient confidentiality at all times

  16. Other Duties as assigned.



Job Qualifications:  



 Education:      



Required:   High school diploma or equivalent                                                                                   



Experience:



Preferred:    One-year related pharmacy experience and/or training or graduate of a certified training program/healthcare careers college    



License/Certifications:



Required/Conditional:   Sterile Products Certification within 2 years of hire
