Job Description

Summary:
We are seeking a Substitute Para to join our team at the District. The successful candidate will be responsible for providing support to teachers and students in the absence of the regular Para. This is a substitute position, and the selected candidate will be called upon to fill in on an as-needed basis.

Requirements: High School Diploma/GED, AA Degree or 72 college credits, or a passing grade on the para test administered at the school. (by appointment)

MANDATORY CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Successful clearance of the FBI and Washington State Patrol fingerprint background clearance
  • Successful Washington State Sexual Misconduct clearance (if applicable)
  • Completion of Federal I-9, Employment Verification Eligibility form.

SUBSTITUTE PARAEDUCATOR
Reports to: Elementary Principal
Building: Elementary School
Hours/Days:Varies
Salary: $18.98
Union Position: No

JOB SUMMARY:
The role of a substitute paraeducator may include, under the direction of teachers, reading, scribing, supervising students,
recording and summarizing data, and maintaining records. Subbing as a para you will need to be versatile and patient.
You will be responsible for the student’s health (mental & physical) as well as for their safety and education. Please follow
the instructions left by the para in which you are subbing as well as the teacher. Each para has specific duties/jobs while
working at OSD. Listed below are some of the responsibilities that you may be doing while subbing as a para to ensure
efficient operation of the classroom/building.
JOB ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
● Ability to assist the teacher with instruction of students with moderate to severe disabilities
individually, or in small groups, to meet their learning needs.
● Provide encouragement and positive reinforcement when students have met their individual academic
and behavioral goals.
● Assists the teacher(s) with instructional and non-instructional activities that enhance student learning
and achievement.
● Work with students K-12, parents, and community members in a friendly manner.
● Assist students with toileting, which may include diapering; attend to the personal hygiene needs of
students.
● Attends to student’s physical and safety needs. Corrects behaviors and maintains discipline according
to established policies and procedures.
● Monitors individual students, classroom, library, and playground activities for the purpose of providing
a safe and positive learning environment.
● Ensure the safety of staff, the student body and self by being familiar with and following safety
● protocols thoroughly
● Demonstrates ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students in school
environments and the community.
● Support the teaching and learning of all students. Teachers or other licensed professionals will provide
initial instruction. Please review the lessons and provide independent assistance to the students.
● Help students interact successfully by modeling and prompting appropriate behavior. They may work
with small groups of students to reinforce social skill learning.
● Other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
● High School Diploma/GED, AA Degree or 72 college credits, or a passing grade on the para test administered

LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group
situations to students, staff, and community members.
REASONING ABILITY: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written
or oral instructions. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk,
sit, bend frequently.
