Job Summary:

Student applicants are encouraged to follow up with the Department Contact listed above regarding the status of their submitted application. Student positions are filled each semester on a need-to-hire basis. Applicants are reviewed whenever the department has an immediate need to fill a vacancy; the review of applications typically ends once all available positions are filled.

Peer Tutors will work with the teaching faculty and professional tutors as assigned throughout the semester, engaging in student outreach, facilitating regularly scheduled study groups, participate in on-going tutor training sessions, and department wide meetings. The Learning Commons department is committed to providing a friendly, inspiring, supportive, and helpful work and learning environment through a culture of care. A Peer Tutor’s primary role in the Learning Commons Department is to provide excellent services to support student success initiatives of the College, which also promotes diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Peer Tutors must be able to commit to working at least 8 hours per week during the semester. Evenings and weekend assignments may be required.


Regular on campus presence is expected for all LCC employment. Any flexible work schedules and/or hybrid work schedules approved by the College are subject to change based on the needs of the LCC community.


Final candidates will be subject to a criminal background check as part of the employment process.






Requirements for LCC Student Employment:

The primary purpose of student employment is to provide current LCC students the opportunity to acquire job skills and experiences during semesters in which they are attending classes as follows:
• Enrolled and actively attending the following total LCC credit hours by semester
- Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 6.0 credits minimum (taken over 16-week period)
- Summer Semester = 3.0 credits minimum (taken over 8-week period)
• High School Diploma or GED
• Actively pursuing a certificate, associates, or undergraduate degree at Lansing Community College

Note: International students (i.e., F-1 visa holders w/ valid I-20 issued by LCC) must meet the following minimum enrollment requirements each semester, in order to maintain employment eligibility per United States Citizenship & Immigration Services (USCIS):
- Fall and/or Spring Semester(s) = 12.0 credits min. (taken over 16-week period)
- Summer Semester = 3.0 credits min. (taken over 8-week period)

Additional Position Requirements
• Minimum GPA of 3.0 at LCC or from high school
• Completion of one of the following courses with a 3.0 or higher: Japanese 121
• One reference must be from an instructor of Japanese at LCC. You must provide the name of your LCC Instructor to the Learning Commons prior to a scheduled interview.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office: Outlook, Word, and Excel.
• Able to commit to working at least 8 hours per week during the semester, in addition to evenings and weekend assignments, as required.






Preferred Qualifications:

• 3.5 GPA or better at LCC or from high school.
• Experience tutoring, mentoring, teaching, and/or coaching (may be volunteer, internship, or professional work experience).
• Experience in customer service (may be volunteer, internship, or professional work experience).
