About You:

The Temporary part-time Risk Specialist will support various functions of the Risk Management division, gaining hands-on experience in insurance administration, claims management, actuarial reporting, and data analysis.

The Risk Management Division is at the forefront of protecting City resources, supporting operations and enabling resilient service delivery. We identify, assess, and manage risks that could impact the effective operation of the City programs and services. Our team works collaboratively across departments to ensure decisions are informed, and operations are secure, while maintaining transparency to the community.

Work Hours:

This position offers a flexible schedule of 4–5 hours per day, with work completed Monday - Friday any time between 9:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. We are open to collaborating on a schedule that works best for both the employee and the team.

Position Duties

The intent of this job description is to provide a representative summary of the major duties and responsibilities performed by employees in this job. Employees may be requested to perform job-related tasks other than those specifically presented in this description.

  • Receives, prioritizes, and processes claims while reviewing claim information to ensure completeness.

  • Determines claim type and applicable coding while setting up and organizing claim folders and the filing system, and organizes and distributes related documents and information to applicable departments and contacts

  • Pursues third-party, at-fault property claims to maximize recovery

  • Provides customer support by responding to information requests, serving as a liaison between applicable departments, leaders, employees, the public, and third-party administrators, and answering questions related to processes, procedures, and timelines

  • Assist in insurance program administration, including reviewing certificates of insurance for compliance with City requirements

  • Contribute to ongoing risk initiatives by researching best practices, supporting risk mitigation projects, and helping analyze departmental data to identify areas of operational risk

  • Processes Risk vendor invoices, prepares, updates, and maintains records, reports, databases, policies, procedures and other related documents and information

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience: 
High school degree or GED required and three years of clerical/office support experience


 OR 

Any equivalent combination of training and/or experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities may be substituted.

Other Qualifications

Knowledge of:

  • Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
  • Customer service principles
  • Practices and methods of processing claims

Skill in:

  • Organizing tasks, meeting deadlines and prioritizing competing demands
  • Providing attention to detail in work assignments

Ability to:

  • Work independently and handle confidential information with discretion
  • Compose and maintain basic original documents including reports, presentations, and correspondence
  • Perform basic research, compile and assemble data
