POSITION DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Fitness Coach/Educator
EXEMPT: No JOB CODE: 4-TS T6
TARGET SALARY: $23.07 to $25.63/DOQ SHIFT: 32 hr/week flex

REPORTS TO: Community Gym Manager
SUMMARY: Serves as an educator for the Community Gym in areas of exercise and promotion of health lifestyle choices. Responsible for planning, coordinating, implementing, and evaluating fitness program activities, which working closely with Community Health Nurse and Nutrition Coach.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Because of the Tribe’s commitment to community service and the well-being of its members, each employee may be expected to perform a wide range of office and field duties from time to time. Such duties may or may not be related to their regular responsibilities.
- Educate referred clients about their fitness needs and how to improve health by:
- Discussing and analyzing current physical activity
- Identifying the importance of specific exercises needed for each client
- Developing, implementing, and monitoring exercise plans for individuals and specific client populations (i.e., Elders, Youth, Individuals with chronic conditions and post rehabilitations)
Instruct individuals in perceptual motor development, aerobics, stretching, weight training and utilization of fitness equipment.
Oversee, coordinate and lead group fitness classes such as Youth and Elder classes.
Maintain client exercise records in accordance with established standards and submit weekly and/or monthly reports to supervisor, per supervisor’s request.
Ensure a safe, clean, and congenial environment for all fitness program participants and maintain equipment proper in a manner while adhering to the equipment maintenance schedule.
Plan and conduct community presentation on strategies for and benefits of increasing physical activity.
Plan and distribute health promotions materials including flyers, newsletter articles, social media posts to promote Fitness Activities.
Engage the community to build support for implementing evidence based strategies to prevent chronic diseases and to reduce obesity through healthy eating and increased physical activity.
Plan and conduct culturally appropriate community based healthy life style based activities for youth, teens, adults, elders, and families.
Supervise volunteers, temporary employees, or approved personal services contractors in conjunction with approved events or classes.
Work hours include standard office hours and a flexible schedule that requires some evenings, weekends, and holidays.
QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Associates degree (A.A.) or credit equivalent in Fitness, eservice Science, Wellness, or related field from a two-year college.
Bachelor’s degree in Kinesiology/Sport and Exercise or related field preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports and general business correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Washington State Drivers license and insurable. May be required to drive a Tribal GSA vehicle to perform job duties. If so, a driving history/background check will be conducted on the applicant.
This position is classified as a sensitive Tribal position. Therefore, applicant must submit to and clear a pre-employment criminal background check.
Must have a First Aid/CPR card or ability to obtain within 90-days of hire.
Must possess blood borne pathogen training or the ability to obtain it within 30 days from the date of hire. Failure to obtain will result in termination of employment.
Must have Certification in group exercise/personal training/youth fitness/functional training, or the ability to obtain within 6 months for date of hire.
OTHER QUALIFICATIONS
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of English, grammar, spelling, punctuation and a variety of letter and report format in order to prepare correspondence and reports.
Knowledge of standard office procedures necessary to provide for the smooth and efficient operation of the program by maintaining appointment calendars and schedules, tickler files, setting up meetings and conferences, etc. This person should have the ability to function effectively under pressure of time and/or demands of several tasks at once by effectively planning, organizing, and prioritizing work.
Knowledge of tribal procedures and ability to perform work and accomplish tasks in accordance with established policies and procedures, practices, and priorities, of the office and Tribal organization. This includes the ability to plan and organize work using one’s own initiative and to seek information and assistance from other sources as necessary.
Ability to handled emergency situations and participate in clinic or community disaster drills.
Must have a working competence in computer applications and the ability to use major computer software, especially word-processing, spreadsheets and databases.
Ability to communicate with people in-person and by telephone in a friendly and helpful manner.
Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with employees, officials, and the public.
Must submit to and clear a pre-employment alcohol and drug test and random testing, in accordance with the Drug and Alcohol-Free Workplace Act of 2002.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, and sit. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 20 pounds.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
There is common exposure to contagious and infectious diseases. The work may include a certain amount of exposure to hostile and emotionally disturbed patients, family, and visitors.
