    POSITION: Art Teacher

    LOCATION:  Merry Acres Middle School

    JOB SUMMARY:
    The Dougherty County School System seeks a creative and student-centered educator to serve as a Middle School Art Teacher. This position is responsible for fostering students' artistic expression, creativity, and appreciation of the visual arts through engaging, standards-based instruction. The Middle School Art Teacher creates an inclusive and supportive classroom environment where students explore various artistic techniques, media, and cultural perspectives while developing critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills. The teacher also integrates visual arts with cross-curricular learning and supports students in building confidence through artistic exploration.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

    1. Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in Art Education or a related field;
    2. Valid Georgia Teacher certification or Charter Waiver eligible;
    3. Knowledge of visual arts techniques, media, art history, and contemporary artistic practices;
    4. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable;

    SKILLS AND ABILITIES:  

    1. Strong knowledge of art concepts, techniques, and creative processes;
    2. Ability to design engaging lessons that encourage creativity and artistic exploration;
    3. Ability to integrate visual arts with other academic disciplines when appropriate;
    4. Ability to create a positive and inclusive classroom environment that supports diverse learners;
    5. Ability to integrate instructional technology and digital art tools into instruction;
    6. Strong classroom management and organizational skills;
    7. Ability to communicate effectively with students, parents, colleagues, and administrators;
    8. Ability to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive student information appropriately.

    PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    1. Plans and delivers engaging visual arts instruction aligned with state standards and district curriculum;
    2. Provides instruction in a variety of artistic techniques, media, and creative processes including drawing, painting, sculpture, design, and digital art when appropriate;
    3. Encourages creativity, originality, and self-expression among students while promoting appreciation for diverse artistic styles and cultural perspectives;
    4. Maintains a classroom environment that fosters creativity, respect, and collaboration;
    5. Differentiates instruction to meet the needs and skill levels of all students;
    6. Organizes and maintains art materials, equipment, and supplies in a safe and efficient manner;
    7. Assesses student learning through projects, portfolios, critiques, and other authentic assessment methods;
    8. Displays student artwork and supports school and community art events, exhibitions, or showcases;
    9. Collaborates with colleagues and administrators to support student success and school initiatives;
    10. Communicates with parents/guardians regarding student progress and classroom activities;
    11. Maintains accurate records and completes reports in accordance with district and state requirements;
    12. Participates in professional learning and ongoing professional growth opportunities;
    13. Supervises students and school activities as assigned;
    14. Performs other duties as assigned by the Principal or district leadership.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

    1. Ability to lift and carry teaching materials, books, or small classroom equipment (typically up to 25 lbs);
    2. Ability to prepare and manipulate learning materials;
    3. Ability to stand and actively move around the classroom for extended periods;
    4. Ability to move between classrooms, hallways, and other school areas as needed;
    5. Ability to respond quickly in case of emergencies, such as evacuating students or assisting during drills;
    6. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
       

    REPORTS TO:  Principal

    SALARY RANGE:  Ten-Month Contract - Competitive salary and excellent benefits package in accordance with the DCSS Compensation Guide.
