    Position Description: 

    • Understands the developmental principles of infants, toddlers and preschoolers and the primary caregiver relationship to foster affectionate relationships where the foundation for trust is formed
    • Assists the classroom teacher with educational and developmentally appropriate programs and activities that promote the social, emotional, physical and intellectual growth of children
    • Ensures a supportive experience where young children are cared for in an environment rich with sensory experiences, that is responsive to the child's individual needs, and that supports/encourages self-expression

    Experience and Training:

    • Substitute must be at least 18 years old
    • The substitute will work under the direction of the classroom teacher and childcare director
    • Must possess a high school diploma or equivalency certificate
    • Must have the desire to learn and understand developmental principles of young children and/or demonstrate an interest in working with young children (nanny, summer camp counselor, high school vocational program, etc.)

    Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required:

    • Must be able to relate in a positive and sensitive manner to children, their families, staff members and youth participating in the high school child development class in various roles within the childcare center
    • Be committed to the center's goal of providing high-quality early care and education
    • Interact with and encourage children in their daily activities
    • Report problems or concerns that may arise with the children to the classroom teacher or childcare director
    • Possess the necessary qualities to care for and work with children, and to develop cooperative working relationships with co-workers and families
