About the Department

A Pool Lifeguard is responsible for the safety of all users of the North Palm Beach Pool.  The lifeguard monitors patron activity, enforces rules and regulations as necessary, and maintains the facility in compliance with the specifications of the Florida Department of Health. An employee in this classification renders assistance in emergencies by providing life-saving techniques and first aid.  

Position Duties

  • Monitors activity of patrons using the pool, enforcing pool rules and policies.
  • Rescues persons in distress, applying resuscitation techniques and rendering first aid in accordance with American Red Cross standards.
  • Teaches and directs various aquatic activities as assigned.
  • Assists in maintaining general appearance and cleanliness in pool area by cleaning and vacuuming pool and filter system, monitoring pool chlorine and PH levels, and maintaining pool deck, splash pad and pool bathhouse.
  • Collects and deposits program registration and admission fees.
  • Checks members, residents and guests in and out of the pool area.
  • Answers telephone and relays information concerning activities at pool.
  • Attends regularly scheduled meetings and training sessions as directed.
  • Prepares pool reports as necessary.
  • Works weekends, holiday breaks and special events as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Possession of a valid American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor Certificate or American Red Cross Certificate in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
  • Possession of a valid Water Safety Instructor (WSI) certificate preferred
  • Previous experience as a pool guard, swimming instructor or related work experience.
  • Must be at least sixteen (16) years of age.
  • Candidates for this position will be required to successfully complete a lifeguarding skills test administered by Village personnel.

Other Qualifications

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS 

Tasks involve the intermittent performance of physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, or crouching, and that may involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of moderately heavy objects and materials (20-50 pounds).  Some tasks may require intermittent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavier objects (100+ pounds).
 
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee is regularly exposed to outside climate conditions and subject to unpleasant atmospheric elements such as heat, humidity, inclement weather, etc. Additionally, the employee may be exposed to wet and dry conditions, fumes, and toxic or caustic chemicals. Some tasks include working in and around moving parts related to pool mechanical systems. The noise level may be moderately loud when in the pool or pool vicinity.
