Job Description

The Day Camp Coordinator is responsible for ensuring that camp operations run efficiently and that camp staff provide a high-quality,
outstanding camp experience to the children, parents/guardians and families we serve through support and supervision of daily camp
operations. This role is responsible for overseeing the setup and organization of resources and equipment for camp activities,
coordinating the scheduling and coverage of staff, creating and providing team communications and updates and monitoring activities to
ensure a high-quality program and the safety of campers and team members. This includes ensuring that each youth in camp has
appropriate supervision per YMCA standards.

Scope of Responsibilities:

Camper Experience and Camp Management 

  • Oversees daily camp activities and coordinates across all camp cohorts to ensure that camp operations run efficiently and that
    staff have the resources needed to deliver a high-quality camper experience and provide outstanding customer service to
    families. Makes recommendations and modifications to improve service and camp experience.
  • Communicates with parents/guardians to address questions, concerns and deliver updates. Participates in direct service and
    leads camp activities as needed to facilitate operations.
  • Monitors camp rosters as needed to provide appropriate coverage according to YMCA standards including ensuring that every
    child has appropriate supervision and is never unattended.

Camp Team Leadership

  • Provides camp leadership support and expertise as a role model for Unit Leaders, Counselors and other camp team members to
    facilitate cohesive and engaging activities for campers. Promotes YMCA values including keeping the environment welcoming
    and safe for all.
  • Assists with local recruiting, interviewing and selection as needed to identify team members. Supports team goals and
    performance standards by coaching, training and developing unit leaders and counselors to optimize performance. Provides
    feedback to Program Director/Manager to assist with staff observations and intervention as needed.
  • Monitors and provides time and attendance support as needed. Ensures proper scheduling and timekeeping for staff as required
    by supervisor and YMCA policies.

Camp Safety

  • Ensures the physical and social-emotional health and safety of campers by serving as a role model and instilling the importance
    of being developmentally appropriate and safety conscious, following all established YMCA standards and critically evaluating
    situations for potential risks.
  • Identifies, escalates and rectifies potential risks that could threaten the safety, health or well-being of campers and team
    members.
  • Ensures compliance with established policies, rules and regulations. Monitors campers and counselors and provides corrective
    coaching and intervention as necessary.
  • Sets up facilities and/or equipment for daily activities and stores equipment appropriately after use. Immediately notifies
    Program Director of any hazardous or non-functional equipment. Monitors supplies, resources or equipment as needed to
    ensure camp safety and smooth operations.
  • Works to keep facilities safe, clean and inviting by adhering to Association standards.

What you’ll Need

  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required; Bachelor’s degree or college coursework in Recreation, Child Development, Education
    or related field preferred.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age by the first day of camp.
  • Must have 2 or more years of prior experience working with youth; experience in a camp setting highly preferred; if supervising
    specialty camps, relevant specialty experience is a must.
  • Commitment to and passion for the YMCA of Metro Chicago’s mission is a required including a passion for working with diverse
    youth including children with disabilities.
  • Must have the proven ability to establish constructive relationships and interact as a positive role model for both youth and team
    members.
  • Ability to identify and leverage developmentally appropriate practices in conducting camp activities; ability to observe camper
    behavior and apply appropriate behavior management techniques is a must.
  • Experience coaching or directing team members as a Unit Leader or similar role is preferred
  • Excellent verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly and concisely present ideas and concepts and tailor
    communication to multiple audiences
  • Continuous learner who leverages opportunities for learning and applies new knowledge and skills
  • Demonstrates evidence of YMCA Y Team competencies in previous experience or practice

Child Abuse Prevention

  • Following all policies and procedures related to keeping children safe in our facilities and programs, including those related to
