About the Department


The Southwest Suburban Health Department is seeking a Community Health Specialist to support the Senior Center. This role combines administrative support with hands-on program coordination, offering the opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the lives of adults 55 and older. In this position, you will help drive daily operations, assist with financial processing, coordinate volunteers, and play a key role in planning and facilitating engaging programs and events. Working closely with the Senior Center Coordinator and dedicated volunteers, you will help ensure high-quality services in a busy, active environment that offers a wide variety of programs and activities. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys collaboration, community engagement, and creating positive experiences for others.  Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Position Duties

Daily Senior Center Operations:

  • Answer phone calls and assist Senior Center members with questions about programming.
  • Staff the reception desk of the Senior Center as needed. 
  • Prepare and distribute monthly and weekly schedule of senior center activities.
  • Coordinate with Health Department staff on website content for Senior Center and posting of new content.
  • Assist Senior Center Coordinator in development of content for social media and marketing.
  • Enter membership information, programming, and payments into MySeniorCenter.
  • Collect payments for programming and processes and remits monies through City of West Allis finance program.
  • Develops and maintain policies, and procedures for Senior Center.
Senior Center Programming:
  • Support the development and delivery of Senior Center programs and activities by assisting program volunteers in setting up rooms for programming and preparing for activities.
  • Facilitate evidence-based programming such as AARP Senior Planet, Walk with Ease, and Stand Up for your Health.
  • Based on personal interest/experience and center needs facilitate additional senior center programming.

Participation on meetings, committees and workgroups:

  • Participate in internal or external meetings, committees, workgroups, collaborations and coalitions involving community members and community partners. I.e., Age-Friendly West Allis, CHIP action teams, etc. 
    • Positive representative of City, Senior Center and Health Department  
    • Participate in community events and activities that support Senior Center programming and fosters collaborative community partner relationships
    • Experience with group processes
    • Assist with data collection, and generating reports from MySeniorCenter 

Professional development:

  • Attends all mandatory trainings.
  • Completes all required self-assessments and results used as input for own development plan.
  • Assumes responsibility for own professional growth based on development plan- able to identify own goals and challenging areas for growth.

  • Reports to staff on knowledge gained from trainings that will assist colleagues and provides direction on how to implement knowledge to improve divisional services.

Emergency Preparedness activities:

  • Actively participates in internal and external emergency preparedness trainings and drills for emergency situations
    • Considerable knowledge of disaster/emergency preparedness services 
      • will serve as an active member in the agency ICS structure 
      • work with agency leadership to coordinate senior center emergency drills

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma required; Associate’s degree (AA) in Healthcare, Social Work, or a related field preferred.
