Job Description

Catholic Charities of Los Angeles, Inc. is one of the largest human services providers in California that operates a variety of programs to serve the poor and strives to find permanent solutions to crises by offering clients the tools and resources needed to achieve greater self-reliance and stability in their lives. 

St. Margaret’s Center is a community center of Catholic Charities of Los Angeles in the Inglewood area of Los Angeles. The Center provides a comprehensive range of services for low-income and unhoused populations, from food programs, services for individuals experiencing homelessness, education programs, health and wellness services and social support programs. Staff ranges from 17-20 members, and dozens of regular volunteers. An average of 10,000 participants receive approximately 50,000 services each year. 

Thie person in this role greets and directs visitors and telephone callers. They also receive and process applications from clients, obtain background information from clients to clarify eligibility for programs, and maintains case records. 

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Provides general intake and reception services.
  • Assist clients to complete application forms for Agency, government and other social service assistance.
  • Completes forms and records. 
  • Performs word processing and other computer-related work. 
  • Receives calls and inquires, courteously and effectively provides accurate information, and makes proper referrals. 
  • Responds to basic inquiries relating administered programs.
  • Provides general clerical and processing support for operational staff.
  • Distributes and mails participant applications.
  • Reviews participant applications for completeness and basic eligibility.
  • Prepares notices to participants regarding status of application.
  • Stocks participant forms and general office supplies.
  • Process all incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Maintains the reception area and postings on the bulletin board.
  • Displays sensitivity to the client population’s cultural and socioeconomic characteristics.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Completion of high school or equivalent. 
  • One to three years of related experience.
  • Operate standard office and word processing equipment as well as a computer.
  • Type at a speed sufficient to meet position requirements
  • Operate telephone equipment.
  • Maintain accurate and orderly records.
  • Communicate effectively in written and oral form.
  • Handle public contact and relations effectively.
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Display sensitivity, tact, and responsiveness in various situations and needs.
