POSITION DESCRIPTION
TITLE: Fitness Specialist DEPARTMENT: Lifestyle Management
RESPONSIBLE TO: Dietician/Wellness Manager
JOB SUMMARY: Assists in daily activities of the fitness and aquatic areas-providing a safe and effective environment through instruction, motivation and guidance in the use of equipment and programs. Responsibilities include fitness testing, exercise prescription, community and equipment orientations, and instruction of group exercise classes for all levels of care.
PREFERRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS:
1. Experience in the design, implementation and instruction of individual exercise programs and group exercise classes.
2. Experience working with older adults (over 60) is highly desirable.
3. Certification or willingness to obtain group exercise instructor through an organization such as ACE, AFFA, or comparable within 90 days of hire date.
4. Certification, or willingness to obtain certification, as a personal trainer through NCCA accredited organization (example: ACE, NASM, ACSM) within 90 days of hire date.
5. Ability to work with physically impaired residents.
6. Ability to motivate and encourage others and participate within a team dynamic.
7. Ability to demonstrate personal qualities such as being friendly, positive, upbeat and energetic.
8. Strong organizational skills including time and scheduling management, managing multiple computer tracking and entry programs, as well as software for exercise programs.
9. CPR certification.

7. Must adhere to professional standards of ethics at all times.
8. Maintain a professional appearance by adhering to dress code and being neatly groomed.
9. Maintain skills and knowledge in accordance with current research and practice.
10. Participate in continuing education.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Administrative
1. Communicates with the Dietician/Wellness Manager regarding the Vitality Center areas, changing resident conditions, issues of concern, areas of success, and other pertinent information.
2. Assures Wellness programs(s) compliance with facility policies and procedures.
Clinical
1. Promotes and assures standards of practice that are consistent with a high quality of care.
2. Assures resident rights are protected.
3. Solicits and encourages resident participation in fitness programs.
4. Instructs group exercise programs for land based and aquatics
5. Performs individual physical assessments of residents to develop and implement exercise programs according to abilities and needs.
6. Monitors individual resident exercise programs for progress and makes modifications as needed.
7. Designs and implements exercise, aquatic and/or fitness programs according to resident interest, safety, and individual health benefits.
8. Creates and maintains an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest, and a positive calm environment.
9. Performs all exercises on equipment and demonstrates them with clarity and proper explanation to residents/staff.
10. Keeps Fitness and Aquatic Coordinator apprised of concerns and matters of the programming as well as resident issues.
11. Assists with computer programming record keeping for participation and program documentation.
Public Relations
1. Promotes a positive image of long-term health care, retirement living, and fitness.
2. Promotes positive guest relations.
3. Assures that problems and complaints involving the Wellness program(s) and related programming are communicated with the Dietician/Wellness Manager in a timely and appropriate manner.
4. Protects the privacy of residents and employees.
5. Contributes to positive working relationships between Wellness and other departments.
Attendance, Punctuality, and Versatility
1. Works shifts as scheduled
2. Arrives at work on time for scheduled shift.
3. Provides proper notification for absence and/or tardiness.
Other
1. Other duties as assigned.
AUTHORITY:
To design and teach individual and group exercise within the framework of the policies and procedures of the community and standards of the profession.
UNIVERSAL PRECAUTION RISK CLASSIFICATION:
Category A: The person holding this position understands Universal Precautions Risk Classification categories which apply to this position and the individual may be exposed to AIDS, HIV, and Hepatitis B viruses. Tasks That Involve Exposure To Blood, Body Fluids, or Tissues. All procedures or other job-related tasks that involve an inherent potential for mucous membrane or skin contact with blood, body fluids, or tissues, or a potential for spills or splashed of them, are Category A tasks.
VISION:
1. Must be able to visually identify and discern printed words on either typewritten pages or computer screen.
2. Must be able to identify and differentiate colors.
3. Must have depth perception within normal ranges.
HEARING:
1. Must be able to respond to spoken words and other auditory sounds including the ringing of telephone or beepers and monitors.
2. Must be able to respond and communicate orally by telephone.
LIFTING:
1. Must be able to push and maneuver carts/wheel chairs with weight of up to 50 pounds.
2. Must be able to lift 8 ½ pounds to demonstrate the fitness room strength training equipment.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
• Must be able to use, operate and interpret information from equipment in work area.
SPEECH:
• Must be able to verbally communicate in the English language directly and over the telephone and be understood.
RANGE OF MOTION:
• Must be able to kneel or squat to demonstrate exercises.
• Must be able to walk intermittently for 5 hours.
• Must be able to stand for 5 hours intermittently.
• Must have mobility for all parts of the body---walking, bending, lifting, and reaching above head and use of hands.
• Must have manual dexterity, fine motor skills.
• Must be able to stand and/or mobilize intermittently for a 5 hour shift.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Must be able to work under stress.
• Must be able to deal with verbally and physically combative patients.
MENTAL CAPACITY:
• Must have mental capacity to fulfill the requirements of the job including
problem solving, logic, communication and numerical calculations.
• Must be able to read and understand written instructions in English.
• Must have recall and memory.
• Must be able to use judgment in making decisions and choices.
• Must have the ability to analyze numbers and make basic mathematical calculations.
• Must be able to recognize residents’ abilities and possess patience.
• Must be able to coordinate and move between several different residents and tasks at one time.
OTHER:
• Must be in good health and physical condition to attest to the benefits of regular
exercise.

Summary
