Job Description

Description

The SPED Paraprofessional supports the academic, behavioral, and functional success of scholars with disabilities by assisting Special Education Teachers and related service providers in the implementation of Individualized Education Plans (IEPs). This role ensures all scholars receive the support they need to access the curriculum, develop independence, and thrive in an inclusive school environment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instructional Support

  • Assist in implementing IEP goals and accommodations under the supervision of certified staff
  • Work with individual students or small groups to reinforce learning objectives
  • Provide support in general education classrooms, resource rooms, and other instructional settings
  • Adapt classroom materials and activities to meet the individual needs of scholars

Behavioral and Social-Emotional Support

  • Support behavior management plans and interventions consistently
  • Assist in teaching and modeling appropriate social skills
  • Monitor and redirect student behavior in accordance with school expectations
  • Provide crisis support and de-escalation strategies when needed

Documentation and Communication

  • Maintain data logs and progress notes as directed by the special education team
  • Communicate regularly with classroom teachers and service providers to ensure alignment of supports
  • Participate in team meetings and professional development related to special education and inclusive practices

Student Supervision and Care

  • Support students with personal care needs when applicable (e.g., toileting, feeding, mobility)
  • Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and other non-instructional periods
  • Ensure the physical and emotional safety of all students under your care

 

Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS
Required

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate’s degree or two years of college coursework preferred
  • Previous experience working with students with disabilities strongly preferred
  • Must meet any state or district paraprofessional requirements
  • CPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain) preferred
  • Strong commitment to inclusive education and equity for all students

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Ability to move throughout the school campus and work with students in various settings.
  • Ability to sit or stand for extended periods and lift materials up to 20 lbs.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS

  • Availability to work occasional evenings or weekends for school events and meetings.
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional learning and development activities.
