Under the direction of the Operations Coordinator, the Security-Supervisor is responsible for assuring the general welfare, security and safety of the residents, staff, and volunteers, and the facility at Blondell, a 200-bed shelter in the Bronx for mentally ill and medically frail homeless adult women. This position is responsible for the supervision of up to eight persons, including program aides and/or volunteers.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Provide coverage for the general welfare and safety of the shelter residents, staff, and volunteers.
- Provide crisis prevention and intervention as needed.
- Complete routine resident and facility checks to ensure that residents are not at risk and that the facility is free of potential hazards (leaks, fire, destruction of property, etc.)
- Ensure nightly head count is completed (evening shift) and maintain CARES reports as assigned.
- Record incidents and resident’s grievances appropriately in the logbook and on incident reports.
- Assign work-related projects to program aides, security, and maintenance as needed.
- Inspect all cleaning and service chores assigned to program aides to ensure completion.
- Conduct regular fire drills during day, evening, night, and weekend shifts ensuring that all staff and residents follow procedure.
- Interact with NYPD, EMS, NYFD, and know when it is appropriate to make emergency calls.
- Interview and train program aides as directed by the Evening Manager.
- Provide coverage on an emergency basis when needed.
- Arrange for coverage for a current or following shift when necessary, including shift supervisor, program aides, security, or maintenance.
- Other duties as assigned.
Staff Supervision
- Notify the Evening Manager of adjustments to staff scheduling to accommodate illness, etc.
- Supervise program aides to ensure that they are meeting goals and performing their duties and discuss with the Evening Manager
- With the approval of the Evening Manager, remove program aides from duty for infractions, and violations of policies
- Ensure that all necessary information is communicated to program aides as policy and procedures change
- Assist Evening Manager as needed in completing documentation relevant to resident and facility reporting.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
Educational Requirements:
- High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma required.
- Must have NYS Security Guard License and current 8-hour annual Certificate.
- F80 Fire Guard License
Experience:
- Minimum two years experience working in a residential facility, preferably experience working with dual-diagnosed individuals, mental health and substance abuse issues, and some supervisory experience
- Must have good interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate effectively both written and oral
- Ability to handle and prevent crisis situations with minimal supervision.
- Must have some computer skills and be able to formulate incident reports
- Ability to work with clientele that have special needs and provide assistance with respect and compassion.
- Help to foster and to promote a positive and harmonious atmosphere at the shelter.
