Choral Music Teacher

 

Reports to: Principal or Ex Dir of Teaching & Learning Location: Middle School/High School

Bargaining Unit: CEA                                                     FLSA Status: Exempt

 

Job Summary: 

This position provides for the development in each student an appreciation of the art of music as part of general culture; to teach techniques of vocal music expression; to discover and develop talents of students in the field of music; to develop knowledge and skills in listening to, reading, and the performance of music. The position may be located on multiple school sites based on student requests and the needs of the district.

 

Required Qualifications:

●        Current Washington State Teaching Certificate with an endorsement in Music.  

●        Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively, possess awareness (for self and others), listen actively, be patient, be empathic, and be customer-service oriented

●        Successful experience working collaboratively with staff, students, and families

●        The ability to support the District’s vision, mission, and goals, including the belief that all students can succeed

●        Ability to maintain confidentiality, work independently and in a team setting, and effectively problem-solve

●        Demonstrated ability to be a reflective learner

●        Demonstrated ability to maintain a positive attitude

●        Willingness to implement and support the band and orchestra music curricular programs

●        Ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations

●        A vision for a robust and comprehensive music program in the Centralia School District.

 

Preferred Qualifications:

●        Ability to speak Spanish

●        Knowledge of instructing beginning and advanced choir classes.

●        Ability to successfully implement grade level expectations

●        Successful music teaching experience

●        Successful experience growing a music program

 

Essential Functions

●        Plans and implements engaging instruction consistent with building and adopted curriculum in the areas of choral music.

●        Plans and coordinates 7-12 musical performances and programs for fall, winter and spring performances.

●        Creates a safe physical and emotional space for students to engage in rigorous academic learning

●        Actively supports and reinforces school/district policies and procedures

●        Creates a classroom management system aligned to the schoolwide approach: 1) Clearly defines behavior expectations 2) Consistently communicates and enforces behavior expectations 3) Address breakdowns of expectations privately with students 4) Approaches discipline as an opportunity to teach/reinforce expectations with the goal of changing behavior following CHAMPS and school expectations.

●        Collaborates in Professional Learning Communities in effort to grow and improve all CSD Music programs.

●        Prepare and direct choirs for concerts, festivals, and various competitions throughout the year.  Build a culture of excellence, teamwork, and pride in performance. 

●         Promote the choir program as a visible and valued part of the school and broader community

●        Records accurate and timely attendance aligned with school/district policies and procedures

●        Maintains accurate and timely grades with the primary purpose to communicate students’ progress towards understanding learning targets

●        Maintains timely and professional lines of communication with students, families, staff, and building administration

●        Ensures classroom practices align with students’ individual IEPs, 504s, ML Plans, or other specialized plans as appropriate

●        Utilizes the technology in the classroom to enhance instruction and engage students

●        Actively supports all aspects of the School Improvement Plan

●        Attend trainings as directed or appropriate

●        Other duties as assigned

 

Salary:  $63,567 to $125,972 depending on experience and qualifications


Work schedule: 1.0 FTE (187 days per school year) – 7:25 a.m. to 2:55 p.m.

 

Benefits: 12 Sick leave and 3 personal leave days; health benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability insurance through SEBB; State retirement through DRS; other fringe benefits as allowed under the Centralia Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
