Role Purpose
The Data Governance Specialist is responsible for establishing, implementing, and maintaining the data governance framework for Brentwood Industries’ digital intelligence platform and enterprise data assets. This role champions data quality, compliance, and responsible data usage across the organization.
The specialist collaborates closely with the Digital Intelligence Platform Lead, Data Scientists, Data Analysts, business stakeholders, and IT teams to ensure data remains a valuable, trusted, and well-managed asset. This position focuses less on building pipelines and more on defining, governing, and enforcing how data is managed.
Key Responsibilities :
Data Governance Framework Development & Implementation
- Develop, implement, and maintain a comprehensive data governance framework aligned with industry best practices (including DAMA-DMBOK and principles from Data Governance: The Definitive Guide) and organizational objectives.
- Define and document governance principles including data ownership, stewardship, accountability, and decision rights.
- Establish and chair a Data Governance Council/Committee with cross-functional representation.
- Develop and deliver data governance training and awareness programs.
Data Quality Management
- Define and implement data quality standards, metrics, and monitoring processes.
- Partner with the Digital Intelligence Platform Lead and Data Analysts to implement quality checks and validation rules.
- Proactively identify, investigate, and resolve data quality issues with data owners/stewards.
- Maintain a data quality issue tracking and resolution process.
- Monitor data quality metrics and drive continuous improvement.
Metadata Management
- Establish and maintain a metadata management program including:
- Data dictionary
- Business glossary
- Data lineage tracking
- Ensure metadata accuracy, completeness, consistency, and currency.
- Integrate metadata tools and processes into the data platform.
Data Security & Compliance
- Collaborate with IT Security and Compliance teams to ensure adherence to applicable data privacy regulations (e.g., GDPR, CCPA) and internal policies.
- Define and enforce data access controls and authorization standards.
- Participate in data security audits and risk assessments.
Data Stewardship & Ownership
- Work with stakeholders to identify and assign data owners and stewards.
- Provide guidance and support to ensure accountability.
- Facilitate collaboration across governance participants.
Data Governance Tooling & Technology
- Evaluate and recommend data governance tools (e.g., data catalogues, metadata platforms, data quality tools).
- Support integration of governance tooling within the digital intelligence ecosystem.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate governance principles, policies, and procedures effectively.
- Build strong cross-functional relationships.
- Champion a data-driven culture.

Required Skills :
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field
- Master’s degree preferred
Experience
- Minimum 5+ years of experience in:
- Data governance
- Data quality
- Data management
- Or related domains
- Strong understanding of governance frameworks and best practices (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK)
- Experience implementing governance programs and initiatives
- Experience with:
- Data quality tools & techniques
- Metadata management
- Data cataloguing
- Knowledge of data privacy regulations (GDPR, CCPA)
- Experience with governance platforms (Collibra, Informatica Axon, Alation) – preferred
- Experience collaborating with data architects and/or engineers
