Our Grades 7–12 school is seeking a student-centered, relationship-driven professional to join our team in a student support role. We are accepting applications for either a Professional School Counselor or a School Social Worker and will fill one position based on the candidate whose strengths and experience best align with the needs of our students and school community.

Anderson County Junior Senior High School is located in Garnett, Kansas.  Garnett is approximately 20 miles south of Ottawa on Highway 31, Kansas or 45 miles southwest of Olathe, KS on Highway 169.


 


Job Description


Position Title: 7–12 School Social Worker (Counseling-Focused Role)
Location: Anderson County Junior/Senior High School
Reports To: Building Principal
FLSA Status: Exempt
Contract: Certified Contract (plus 10 additional days)
Base Salary: $45,950 (per negotiated agreement; placement on salary schedule based on education and experience){additional days paid at daily rate}


Benefits: 100% coverage Blue Cross/Blue Shield single coverage health insurance tier 1 or 2 (or 92% of tier 3)


 


Position Purpose


The 7–12 School Social Worker serves primarily in a school counseling capacity, supporting students’ academic achievement, post-secondary readiness, and social-emotional development. While grounded in social work practice and systems-level support, this role functions as part of the school counseling program and collaborates closely with administration, staff, and families to remove barriers to student success.


The position emphasizes direct student support, case management, resource coordination, and advocacy within a comprehensive student services framework.


 


Essential Functions


Counseling & Student Support



  • Provide short-term individual and small group counseling focused on social-emotional skills, coping strategies, conflict resolution, and resilience.

  • Support students with academic planning and goal-setting in collaboration with administration and staff.

  • Assist with graduation planning and monitoring progress toward credit completion.

  • Participate in student support teams, including MTSS and 504 processes.

  • Respond to crisis situations and assist in implementing safety plans when needed.


Case Management & Family Engagement



  • Identify and address barriers to learning, including attendance concerns, behavioral challenges, and family stressors.

  • Conduct needs assessments and connect families with community-based resources.

  • Serve as liaison between school, home, and outside agencies.

  • Support attendance improvement initiatives and re-engagement strategies.


Post-Secondary & Career Readiness Support



  • Assist students with post-secondary planning, including college, technical training, military, and workforce pathways.

  • Support students with applications, financial aid resources, and scholarship opportunities as assigned.

  • Collaborate with staff to implement career exploration and readiness programming.


Systems & Collaboration



  • Work collaboratively with administrators, counselors, teachers, and support staff to design and implement proactive supports.

  • Use data to inform intervention strategies and improve student outcomes.

  • Maintain appropriate documentation and ensure compliance with state and federal guidelines.

  • Participate in professional development and maintain required licensure.


 


Required Qualifications



  • Valid Kansas License as a Master Social Worker (LMSW) or Licensed Specialist Clinical Social Worker (LSCSW), or ability to obtain licensure.

  • Experience working with adolescents.

  • Knowledge of trauma-informed practices and systems-based support.

  • Strong communication, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.


 


Preferred Qualifications



  • Experience working in a secondary school setting (grades 7–12).

  • Experience supporting graduation planning and post-secondary readiness.

  • Knowledge of MTSS frameworks and data-informed interventions.

  • Experience coordinating community partnerships and wraparound services.


 


Physical Requirements



  • Ability to perform routine school-related duties.

  • Ability to respond promptly in crisis situations.
