Job Description

About the Department

Performs intermediate semiskilled work maintaining and repairing parks, ball fields, cemeteries, golf course, playground equipment, buildings and facilities, performing general maintenance and grounds keeping duties, and related work as apparent or assigned. Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Facilities Crew Supervisor.

Position Duties

  • Mows and maintains parks and other City grounds, cemeteries, golf roughs, and playgrounds; plants shrubs, sows grass, blows leaves, and maintains beds.
  • Trims hedges and weeds around fences, water hazards, play equipment, and other areas not accessible by mower.
  • Sprays fertilizer, herbicides, and fungicides on grounds.
  • Repairs and maintains irrigation systems.
  • Performs minor electrical and plumbing work on buildings and picnic shelters.
  • Paints walls and parking lots as instructed.
  • Helps set up facilities for events.
  • Operates a variety of equipment including aerator, reel gang mower, fertilizer spreader, pull behind rotary mower, and hand tools in the performance of tasks.
  • Performs light maintenance of tractors and equipment; checks and changes oil, water, and fluid levels; changes filters.
  • Checks and inspects facilities, grounds, and equipment for necessary repairs.
  • Sweeps and mops floors daily; strips and waxes floors semi-annually; cleans restrooms.
  • Cleans buildings; empties garbage cans; picks up litter and debris.
  • Winterizes city facilities.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or GED and moderate experience in the performance of general building maintenance, grounds keeping, or parks maintenance work, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Obtain CPR certification within one year of hire. Valid driver's license in the State of North Carolina.

General knowledge of the tools, materials, and equipment used in general construction, turf grass, horticulture, and maintenance work; general knowledge of the materials, equipment, tools, and techniques of the standard building trades; some knowledge of safety precautions applicable to the duties of the class; ability to understand and follow specific oral instructions; ability to read maps and take measurements; ability to operate mowers, tractors, and related machinery and equipment; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, contractors, vendors, and the general public.
