Position Description

TITLE: Secondary ELL Specialist REPORTS TO: Principal

DEPARTMENT: CLASSIFICATION: Teacher


FLSA: Non Exempt WORK YEAR: 186 days

BOARD APPROVAL:


BASIC FUNCTION: Provides support to assigned secondary school’s English learner program, and assists the school in providing services that are academically, culturally, and linguistically responsive to English learner needs.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the school site principal.

QUALIFICATIONS: A teaching credential authorizing services in the grade level or specialty indicated, including CLAD/BCLAD or equivalent. Must have language and cultural competency to effectively communicate with parents and students who are not English speakers. Ability to speak Spanish is desired.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

· Administers state and federal required language assessments
· Assists school site staff in program development, implementation, and evaluation
· Works with counselors and appropriate staff to ensure students’ appropriate program placement and fulfills parent notification requirements
· Coordinates resources and instructional support for teachers and other staff who deliver services
· Provides teacher professional development and/or coaching as needed
· Meets as needed with students to provide academic support
· Facilitates student study teams and language appraisal meetings with teachers and parents
· Assists in conferencing and communicating in English and/or students’ primary language with parents of EL students
· Assists in development and coordination of written communications to and for parents of participating students
· Conducts English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings and provides training to parent members

A valid California teaching credential with CLAD or a full English Learner authorization.
