Job Description

General Definition of Work


The transportation maintenance services supervisor, under intermittent supervision, performs supervisory work with limited decision-making discretion managing the vehicular maintenance program at assigned transportation staging site.  Position supervises all servicing, scheduled maintenance, fueling, inspections, and minor repairs.  Employee performs district-level work to carry out Board of Education policies under the direction of the Assistant Director of Fleet Services.


Essential Functions



  • Adhere to all state, federal, and local laws, policies, and procedures

  • Lead, manage, supervise, and evaluate assigned staff/programs

  • Monitor and inspect work to ensure that it is completed on time and correctly

  • Recommend and implement changes when necessary to support improvement

  • Schedule the preventative maintenance program for all assigned vehicles using the State computer program

  • Coordinate and schedule major repairs with appropriate personnel

  • Collaborate on the development of site hours and individual schedules necessary to meet the needs of the transportation department and programs served

  • Utilize special analysis and testing equipment, trouble shoots; support and develop staff members

  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs when necessary to clear backlog

  • Maintain all documentation required at the site to include records of all inspections, repairs and/or maintenance work performed and parts/supplies used

  • Establish and maintain an on-site library which contains all manuals and publications needed and/or required to include: The State Preventive Maintenance Manual, CMS Procedures Manual, OSHA, EPA and ADA publications and regulations; Material Safety Data Sheets, and the Hazardous Materials Program.

  • Coordinate to maintain a stocked inventory and request orders for any special needed parts and/or supplies

  • Monitor NC safety emission standards and vehicle compliance and prepare reports necessary for the NC Department of Public Instruction

  • Complete local, state, or federal surveys and reports accurately and promptly

  • Create an inclusive environment with positive communication/public relations

  • Perform related work as assigned or required


Education and Experience



  • High School diploma or GED required

  • Minium of five (5) years of increasingly responsible experience in vehicle maintenance and repair required

  • Experience maintaining and repairing school buses preferred

  • Equivalent combination of education and experience


Licensing / Certification Requirements: Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid NC CDL with “S” endorsement. Possession of, or the ability to obtain a valid NC DPI Certification.
