Position Summary
The Plasma Operator is responsible for safely operating CNC
plasma cutting equipment to process steel plate and structural materials
according to work orders, blueprints, and customer specifications. This role
plays a key part in supporting Willbanks Metals Inc.’s steel fabrication and
distribution operations by producing accurate parts, maintaining equipment, and
upholding quality and safety standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Set up and operate CNC plasma cutting equipment
and related material handling equipment in accordance with established
procedures.
·
Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, and
part drawings to determine material type, thickness, cutting path, and
tolerances.
·
Select appropriate consumables, cutting
programs, and tooling based on material specifications and job requirements.
·
Verify that correct, traceable material is used
for each job and that heat numbers and identification are maintained when
required.
·
Load and unload plate and structural steel onto
the plasma table using overhead cranes, forklifts, or other material handling
equipment.
·
Monitor machine operation, adjust settings as
needed, and troubleshoot minor issues to maintain cut quality and productivity.
·
Perform basic nesting, part layout, and program
selection using the plasma control interface and/or associated software as
trained.
·
Inspect finished parts using measuring tools
(tape measures, squares, calipers, micrometers, etc.) to verify dimensions and
quality.
·
Perform routine preventive maintenance on plasma
equipment, torches, filters, and support systems and report any needed repairs.
·
Maintain an organized, clean, and safe work area
in accordance with company 5S and housekeeping expectations.
·
Accurately record production information,
material usage, and work order status in the company’s software or paperwork as
required.
·
Follow all company safety policies and
procedures, including the proper use of PPE and safe operation of material
handling equipment.

Assist in training new operators and
cross-training in other fabrication processes as needed.
·
Perform other related duties as assigned to
support overall plant operations.
Qualifications
·
High school diploma or equivalent required.
·
Minimum of 1–2 years of experience operating a
CNC plasma cutting machine or related metal fabrication equipment preferred.
·
Previous experience in a manufacturing,
fabrication, or industrial environment required.
·
Ability to read and interpret blueprints,
technical drawings, and job specifications.
·
Proficiency using precision measuring
instruments such as tape measures, calipers, and micrometers.
·
Previous experience operating forklifts,
overhead cranes, or other material handling equipment preferred; willingness to
obtain required certifications.
·
Basic computer skills and ability to work with
CNC interfaces and production software after training.
·
Strong attention to detail, quality, and safe
work practices.
·
Ability to work independently with minimal
supervision and as part of a team.
·
Good problem-solving skills and ability to
identify and communicate equipment or quality issues promptly.
Physical Requirements
·
Ability to stand, walk, bend, and reach for
extended periods of time during the shift.
·
Ability to regularly lift, push, or pull up to
50 pounds and occasionally more with assistance or mechanical lifting devices.
·
Ability to work in a production environment with
exposure to noise, heat, dust, and moving equipment.
·
Ability to wear required personal protective
equipment (safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, steel-toe footwear,
etc.).
Schedule
This is a full-time, hourly position. Standard shifts may
vary (8-hour, 10-hour, or 12-hour shifts) based on business needs. Typical
workdays are Monday through Saturday, with overtime as required to meet
production and customer demands.
