Job Description

Position Summary

The Volunteer School Coach supports the school’s athletic program by assisting in the development of student-athletes. This role focuses on teaching sport-specific skills, promoting teamwork, and fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive environment. The coach serves as a role model, encouraging students to demonstrate good sportsmanship, discipline, and respect both on and off the field.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in planning and conducting practices, drills, and training sessions
  • Teach fundamental skills, rules, and strategies of the sport
  • Promote teamwork, sportsmanship, and positive behavior
  • Supervise students during practices, games, and team activities
  • Ensure student safety and proper use of equipment
  • Support the head coach or athletic staff in organizing games and events
  • Monitor student participation and encourage academic accountability
  • Communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents
  • Follow all school policies, procedures, and athletic guidelines

Qualifications

  • Interest or experience in coaching or the specific sport
  • Ability to work effectively with students of varying skill levels
  • Strong leadership, communication, and teamwork skills
  • Positive attitude and ability to motivate students
  • Prior coaching or mentoring experience (preferred but not required)

Requirements

  • Completion of volunteer application and approval process
  • Background check
  • Availability for scheduled practices and games
  • Willingness to follow school and athletic department policies

Work Environment

  • Indoor and outdoor athletic settings (gym, field, track, etc.)
  • Active environment requiring standing, walking, and occasional physical activity
