About the Department

The Dane County Board Office has a limited term vacancy for an LTE Intern in the Legislative Support Services division in Madison, WI.

Limited Term Employees (LTEs) are limited to 1,200 hours in a payroll year and are not guaranteed any hours per week.

DEFINITION

The Office of the Dane County Board of Supervisors is providing an internship opportunity to students interested in legislative process, public policy, and training.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

The position will complete tasks in support of the County Board as directed by County Board Office staff. 


General duties may include: assisting with staffing committee meetings, developing processes and trainings, facilitating trainings, reviewing and updating public resources, archiving documents and special projects as assigned.


Duties related to training may include: assisting staff in developing web-based training modules, working with the County Board Chair and staff to develop and facilitate trainings for County Board Supervisors, reviewing existing training opportunities and making recommendations for future trainings, review current processes for interpretation for hybrid public meetings and develop training content to deliver to County staff.


Additional duties may include: staffing public meetings, archiving records, taking meeting minutes, and working with staff on processing video recordings of public meetings. 

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training and Experience:

Any combination of education, training and/or experience equivalent to one (1) year of college with course work in communications, journalism, business, marketing, public affairs, or public administration; and any combination of training and experience equivalent to six (6) months of clerical experience.


Special Requirements:

Must have a valid driver’s license, or access to reliable personal transportation, or equivalent.


Background Check Statement: Some positions may require a criminal background check which can include fingerprinting due to the nature of the job's responsibilities. Wisconsin's Fair Employment Law, s. 111.31 – 111.395, Wis. Stats., prohibits discrimination because of an arrest or conviction record. For Bilingual Positions:

  1. Provide services in both English and the required foreign language (e.g., Spanish, Arabic, Hmong, etc.). 
  2. Applicants being considered for bilingual positions will be tested during the recruitment process prior to employment. This will primarily consist of passing an oral language proficiency assessment from English to foreign language and foreign language to English, but may require additional language testing, such as written translation, if it is an essential function of the job. 

*If applicable, individuals may confirm with the Employee Relations Division whether results of bilingual language certifications/ examinations they currently hold qualify them for the position’s bilingual designation.


Physical and Environmental Work Requirements:

Ability to see and hear within normal ranges with or without adaptive devices. Ability to use hand, arm, wrist and finger motion. Ability to work for prolonged periods on a computer.

Other Qualifications

Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in completing assignments. Ability to take initiative and ownership of work. Ability to adhere to deadlines. Ability to relate effectively to and communicate with the County Board members, county personnel, local government officials, community members and elected officials. E?ective oral and written communication skills.  Must spell correctly and use grammar properly. Ability to operate word processing software packages on a personal computer. Must have ability to set up and type a variety of letters and reports. Ability to operate standard o?ce equipment. Ability to type neatly and accurately.  Able to work independently and as a member of a team.
