DOT Driver – Qualifications & Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Cargo Safety: Secure cargo properly to prevent shifting or damage during transport
  • Logbook Maintenance: Accurately record driving hours, rest periods, and required data in compliance with DOT regulations
  • Route Planning: Follow assigned routes using maps or GPS while meeting delivery schedules
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all DOT regulations, including weight limits, hours of service, and safety standards
  • Incident Reporting: Promptly report accidents, mechanical issues, or safety concerns to dispatch
  • Customer Service: Interact professionally with customers; assist with loading and unloading as needed and follow delivery instructions
  • Documentation: Complete required paperwork such as bills of lading, delivery receipts, and inspection reports
  • Vehicle Maintenance: Perform basic vehicle checks (e.g., tire pressure, fluid levels) to ensure safe operation
  • Work Environment: Operate vehicles in varying weather conditions and terrains

Required Qualifications

  • Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
  • Current DOT medical certification
  • Clean driving record with minimal violations
  • Ability to pass a background check
  • Physical ability to lift and move cargo and sit for extended periods
  • Ability to read and speak English proficiently

Additional DOT Requirements

  • Minimum age: 23 years (for interstate commercial driving)
  • Compliance with all DOT driver qualification standards
  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement required if transporting hazardous materials
