DOT Driver – Qualifications & Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
- Cargo Safety: Secure cargo properly to prevent shifting or damage during transport
- Logbook Maintenance: Accurately record driving hours, rest periods, and required data in compliance with DOT regulations
- Route Planning: Follow assigned routes using maps or GPS while meeting delivery schedules
- Regulatory Compliance: Adhere to all DOT regulations, including weight limits, hours of service, and safety standards
- Incident Reporting: Promptly report accidents, mechanical issues, or safety concerns to dispatch
- Customer Service: Interact professionally with customers; assist with loading and unloading as needed and follow delivery instructions
- Documentation: Complete required paperwork such as bills of lading, delivery receipts, and inspection reports
- Vehicle Maintenance: Perform basic vehicle checks (e.g., tire pressure, fluid levels) to ensure safe operation
- Work Environment: Operate vehicles in varying weather conditions and terrains
Required Qualifications
- Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements
- Current DOT medical certification
- Clean driving record with minimal violations
- Ability to pass a background check
- Physical ability to lift and move cargo and sit for extended periods
- Ability to read and speak English proficiently
Additional DOT Requirements
- Minimum age: 23 years (for interstate commercial driving)
- Compliance with all DOT driver qualification standards
- Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement required if transporting hazardous materials
