Job Description

Operates and maintains one or more systems such as boilers that provide an establishment with such services as heat, air-conditioning (cool, humidify, dehumidify, filter, and circulate air), refrigeration, steam, high-temperature, or demineralized water or electricity. Line up and start-up boiler while paired with journeyman. Duties involve: observes and interprets readings on gauges, meters and charts which register various aspects of the system's operation, adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient operation of the system and to meet demands for the service provided, records in logs various aspects of the system's operation, keeps the engines, machinery and equipment of the system in good working order under supervision. Adjusts controls to ensure safe and efficient boiler operation and demineralized water purification by performing routine maintenance, shutting equipment down, making repairs, and regulating machinery and equipment as necessary while paired with journeyman. Under supervision, control costs by using only enough fuel and other supplies to meet demands for steam or demineralized water. Perform one or more of the following while paired with journeyman.: Maintain a log in which various aspects of boiler operation are recorded; clean, oil, handle chemicals, troubleshoot and make repairs to boiler and auxiliary equipment including steam distribution; and following prescribed methods, treat boiler water with chemicals and analyze boiler water for such things as acidity, causticity, and alkalinity. Assist in preparing reports, material requisitions and other forms. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications and Skills:

Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must be skilled in the repair of electronic control equipment. Must be knowledgeable in water demineralization systems/operations to produce and supply purified water, following prescribed methods, analyzing demineralized water for PH, conductivity, and silica content. Must be able to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays. Must be safety oriented while performing tasks and accept responsibility for action taken. Must be able to work independently as well as with other, work under time constraints and deadlines. Must be able to work from blueprints, drawing, layout, manuals, and other literature.
