Job Description


      Education

  • Graduate of an approved School of Nursing

 

      Experience/Skills

  • One to two years’ professional experience in Emergency Room Nursing preferred
  • Possesses general knowledge of cardiac arrhythmias and the therapeutic modalities for intervention of each specific arrhythmia
  • Shows an overall understanding of Emergency Room Nursing
  • Possesses or is willing to acquire the special knowledge and skills required to implement safe, immediate and effective nursing care to each Emergency Room patient
  • Functions well in stressful and true emergency situations
  • Demonstrates understanding and tact in dealing with patients and visitors
  • Cooperates with law enforcement agencies, coroners, physicians, and all other hospital staff
  • Identifies and assesses problems and situations accurately while exercising good judgment.
  • Establishes effective working relationships with physicians and other professional staff
  • Exhibits the ability to care for patients of all populations

 

      Required Licenses/Certifications

  • Registered Nurse license currently licensed by the State of Indiana
  • CPR
  • ACLS/PALS prior to completion of orientation
  • TNCC within two years

 

      Working Conditions

  • Requires adapting quickly and efficiently to stressful situations
  • Requires control of the entire Emergency Room setting during stressful encounters

 

ROUTINE RESPONSIBILITIES

      Patient Care Duties

  • Effectively prioritizes and triages patients
  • Completes head-to-toe assessments
  • Understands and follows care plans for all patient populations
  • Collaborates with ER physicians
  • Uses the Nursing Bundle
  • Understands and applies policies and Standards of Care
  • Provides psych/social support
  • Provides patient education
  • Assists with follow-up instruction and post-discharge follow-up phone calls

 

      Medication Administration

  • Uses 5 Rights
  • Understands IV pump use
  • Recognizes medication side effects and interactions
  • Understands medication calculations and medication compounding/dispensing
  • Possesses knowledge of critical drips
  • Practices appropriate use of pyxis
  • Complies with scanning of medications
  • Accurately educates patients on medications

 

      Unit Responsibilities

  • Practices organization skills
  • Participates in inventory/stock control
  • Involved in Performance Improvement Projects
  • Completes department-specific education and annual skills day
  • Participates in general cleaning and appropriate refrigerator use
  • Accurately completes patient reporting and hand off
  • Completes delegation of tasks
  • Adheres to laws and regulations

 

      Documentation

  • Understands and practices downtime procedures
  • Ensures appropriate documentation for medication passes and waste
  • Performs hourly rounding
  • Completes vital sign documentation
  • Reconciles medication
  • Completes hand offs and reports (telephone and bedside)
  • Routinely uses and completes whiteboard documentation
