K-5 Social Science Teacher
Location: West Aurora School District 129 (Building To Be Determined)
Reports To: Building Principal & Department Administrator for K-5 Social Science
Travel: This position will require travel between multiple elementary buildings on a rotating schedule.
Position Overview:
The K-5 Social Science Teacher is responsible for delivering high-quality, standards-aligned instruction
in Social Science to elementary students. This position ensures that students develop foundational
knowledge in civics, geography, history, and economics while fostering inquiry, critical thinking, and
engagement with real-world issues. The teacher will collaborate with colleagues to support literacy
development and integrate Social Science concepts into the broader educational experience. This role
will emphasize how content knowledge connects with comprehension, equipping students with the skills
to explore and understand the world around them.
Key Responsibilities:
● Deliver and facilitate developmentally appropriate lessons that encourage students to ask
questions, engage in research, and plan inquiries within social science topics such as history,
geography, civics, and economics.
● Follow the district-approved curriculum for Social Science.
● Use a variety of instructional methods to keep students actively involved in learning and help
them make connections between what they learn and the world around them.
● Encourage students to think critically about social science concepts through discussion, inquiry,
and projects.
● Support the development of reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills within the context of
social science. Help students build literacy strategies that connect reading comprehension with
social science content, enabling them to engage deeply with texts and ideas.
● Modify teaching strategies to accommodate the diverse learning styles and abilities of students
including multilingual learners and students with IEPs.
● Participate in ongoing professional development opportunities to stay current on best practices
for teaching social science and literacy, and integrate new strategies into classroom instruction.
● Communicate effectively with families about student progress and the importance of Social
Science education.
● Work closely with grade-level teams and other specialists to reinforce key reading, writing, and
research skills.
● Use formative and summative assessments to monitor student understanding and adjust
instruction accordingly.
● Ensure alignment with state mandates.
● Maintain accurate records of student progress and participate in data-driven decision-making.
Qualifications
● Required: Valid Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) with Elementary Endorsement
● Required: Experience in an elementary classroom setting.
● Preferred: Endorsement or coursework in Social Science or related fields.
● Preferred: Spanish Speaking or Bilingual Endorsement
