POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is responsible for assisting the Site Leaders and/or Program Coordinators in creating and leading a culture and environment that supports our program objectives of Belonging, Achievement and Relationships.  It will assist in supervising and engaging program participants and staff, organizing and managing program activities, and establishing positive relationships with participants, guardians, and staff members.

 

JOB LOCATION: Colby Park
SEASONAL PROGRAM DATES: June 1 - August 14, 2026
SHIFTS AVAILABLE: Monday-Friday during program hours of 6:30a-6:00p
PAY RANGE: $14.75-16.75/hour based on experience
CLOSING DATE FOR APPLICATIONS:

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 

  1. Support the direction provided by the Site Leadership and fill in as the Site Leader when the Site Leader and/or Program Coordinator are not available. 
  2. Assist with the management of assigned program areas and activities, ensuring programs comply with all applicable YMCA policies and procedures, including Operating Standards and Emergency Procedures, and continually strive to attain the highest possible level of quality.  
  3. Create and maintain a safe environment both physically and emotionally for all participants and staff.
  4. Maintain the Y-Voice in all that you say, do, and think in regards to your program ~ Welcoming, Nurturing, Hopeful, Determined, Genuine
  5. Plan, manage, and lead activities that create a relaxed environment with structure for desired outcome.  
  6. Supervise staffing coverage of program areas and communicate coverage issues with staff and Child Care Leadership when Site Leadership is not available.
  7. Provide versatile coverage across the organization to uphold operational standards and guarantee a seamless, high-quality experience for all participants. 
  8. Assist with leading, supervising, and training staff, along with providing staff with feedback when needed.
  9. Assist with ensuring the daily plan, staff, supplies & materials, schedules, and etc. are in place at the beginning of each day.  
  10. Ensure that staff and participants are engaged in the planning of activities.
  11. Establish positive relationships with staff, participants, guardians, including gaining an understanding of participants' specific needs.
  12. Follow all YMCA of Greater Des Moines’ policies, procedures, operating standards, and emergency procedures.
  13. Attend team meetings, trainings, and events assigned by the supervisor, including summer program training prior to the first week of summer programming.  
  14. Must stay in compliance with all required trainings, certifications, and child care licensing regulations.
  15. Perform additional duties as assigned by supervisor or designated staff person.
  16. Demonstrate and support the objectives of the Association as embodied in the mission statement and values.

Requirements

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability to read, write, and perform simple mathematical functions.
  2. Must be 18 years of age
  3. Minimum of one year of work experience with youth, preferably in a child care or classroom setting.
  4. Minimum of 6 months of work experience in a supervisor / leadership role is preferred.
  5. Perform basic computer skills such as checking in and out participants, computerized time clock, and online training requirements
  6. Current Red Cross CPR/First Aid/AED Certification OR equivalent – prior to starting.
  7. Intro to Y’s Cause & Culture Online Course - prior to starting if hired.
  8. Approval by State of Iowa Licensing requirements including pre-employment physical - with the first 30 days of employment.
  9. Additional training to be completed within the first 30 days and maintained afterwards.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to loud. This position usually works in indoor and outdoor child care oriented environments, but the mission of the organization may sometimes take them to non-standard workplaces.
