About the Department
Position Duties
Economics faculty are members of the Bakersfield College Social Sciences Department. The Social Sciences Department at Bakersfield College provides students with a strong foundation in understanding human behavior, social systems, economic structures, and civic life. Through disciplines such as economics, political science, sociology, and related fields, the department emphasizes critical thinking, analytical reasoning, and informed civic engagement.
The Rising Scholars Program at Bakersfield College supports the educational success of justice-impacted students through high-quality instruction, academic support, and inclusive teaching practices. Primary instructional assignments for Rising Scholars faculty are in local correctional facilities (prisons and jails). Instructional assignments are based on institutional needs and may also include courses at other Bakersfield College instructional sites. Prior experience teaching in correctional or nontraditional educational settings is valued but not required; training and institutional support are provided. Faculty are committed to inclusive teaching practices, academic rigor, and student success across transfer-level and career-focused pathways. Courses are designed to help students examine local, national, and global issues through multiple perspectives while developing skills in research, communication, and problem-solving.
The department serves a diverse student body across multiple instructional locations and plays an important role in general education, transfer preparation, and interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the college.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s in economics
OR –
Bachelor’s in economics AND Master’s in business, business administration, business management, business education, finance or political science

- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
- Ability to maintain subject matter currency;
- Ability to assess student, program, and institutional learning outcomes;
- Knowledge of computers and willingness to adopt new technologies that support student success. Knowledge of and commitment to the California Community College mission.
