Job Description

Summary:
We are seeking a Substitute Cook to join our team at Oakville School District. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing and cooking meals on an as-needed basis. This is a substitute position, which means that the successful candidate will be called upon to fill in for our regular staff when they are unavailable.

Responsibilities:
- Prepare and cook meals according to established recipes and menus
- Ensure that meals are prepared in a timely and efficient manner
- Ensure that all food is prepared and stored in compliance with food safety regulations
- Maintain a clean and organized kitchen environment

Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Previous experience preferred as a Cook or in a similar food service role
- Knowledge of food safety regulations and best practices
- Ability to follow recipes and menus accurately
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Flexibility to work on short notice as a substitute

The Oakville School District is accepting applications for our 2024/2025 school year substitute cook
position. This position would help cover kitchen staff that are out on leave and would need to have
flexible availability in order to cover on possible short notice. The role of the Substitute Cook is to
prepare and serve nutritious meals to students and staff in a safe and efficient manner.

Responsibilities
 The cook’s primary responsibility will be to complete the cooking,
baking, preparing, and serving food items that meet mandated nutritional
requirements; verifying quantities and specifications of orders; maintaining
facilities in a sanitary condition; and assisting assigned food services personnel
in food preparation.
 Maintains the highest standards of safety and cleanliness in the kitchen.

 Maintains all food handling and storage in compliance with state health
department guidelines.
 Prepares food according to a planned menu and determines if the finished
product is of best quality, both in flavor and appearance before it is served.
 Serves breakfast and/or lunches to students.
 Cleans cafeteria area, including the sanitation and wiping down of tables prior
to storage.
 Reports immediately to the director any problems or accidents
occurring in the kitchen or on the cafeteria premises.
 Reports to the food service supervisor any faulty or inferior quality food that is
received.
 Performs the daily cleaning of all kitchen equipment, the washing and sterilizing
of all dishes, silverware, and utensils.
 Performs other food service‐related duties as assigned pursuant to the
contract.
 Performs the essentials of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.
 Completes work assigned.
 Consistently deals with people in a courteous and professional manner.
 Demonstrate good judgment and common sense.
 Capable of standing/walking without restrictions.
 Demonstrate ability to operate and care for kitchen equipment and ability to lift
and carry objects up to 50 pounds.
 Maintaining the cleanliness of the dish washing area, which includes washing
all the lunch trays, pots and pans.
 Maintaining the cleanliness of the dish washing machine.
 Assisting in maintaining a neat, orderly and sanitarily kitchen, storeroom,
refrigeration, freezer areas and floor in compliance with state and county health
codes.
 Ability to use floor cleaning tools, mops and brooms, which may require a
twisting motion of the body. Floors are to be thoroughly mopped on a daily
basis.
 Ability to load and unload supplies and/or commodities from vehicle, including
bending over and underneath truck canopy.
 Trains, works with and supervises student helpers as needed.
 Maintains a current food handlers permit.
 Completes forms, records and reports as required by the state and district
policies.
 Setting up the salad bar/serving area for lunch and running the computer to
check students through the lunch line.
 Breaking down the lunch line and cleaning this area as well as the
kitchen serving area.

 Maintains a current food handlers permit
 Current criminal fingerprint clearance
 High School Diploma or equivalent
