Assistant Project Manager (APM)
Location: Library of Congress – Washington, DC (Onsite)
Position Overview
Zimmerman Associates, Inc. (ZAI) has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Project Manager (APM) to support operations at one of the world’s most prestigious libraries, the Library of Congress in Washington, DC.
The APM will work closely with the Project Manager to ensure production-based library projects are completed on time and meet established performance standards. This role is responsible for supervising teams of 20–40 staff engaged in large-scale material handling and collection management operations across multiple locations.
This is a 100% onsite, physically demanding role requiring prior library and supervisory experience.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee daily tasks assigned by the Project Manager to ensure production goals are achieved
- Supervise production-based operations, including sorting, shifting, shelving, distributing, retrieving, and transporting library materials
- Plan, assign, and monitor daily workflows to maintain productivity targets
- Communicate and enforce standard operating procedures
- Assist with supervision of Team Leads, including quality assurance of their work
- Ensure all safety protocols are understood and followed
- Train and onboard new and existing staff
- Review staff performance to ensure accuracy and efficiency
- Serve as backup to the Project Manager for timesheet approvals and attendance tracking
- Track and compile production and performance data for daily, weekly, and monthly reporting
Qualifications
Education:
- Associate degree required; Bachelor’s degree preferred.
Experience:
- 2+ years of supervisory experience managing teams of 5 or more staff
- 2+ years of experience in library collection management, preferably with large print collections
- Experience using data tracking and reporting tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel)
- Experience compiling and analyzing operational reports (daily, weekly, monthly)
- Experience training staff and evaluating performance
- Demonstrated ability to address personnel and performance issues effectively
Required Skills
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced, production-driven environment
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
Physical Requirements
- Ability to move between multiple work locations
- Lift, carry, push, and pull materials up to 50 lbs
- Push carts or trucks up to 200 lbs
- Perform frequent bending, stooping, and lifting from low shelves
- Work in environments that may be cool and/or dusty
