(SY 26-27) Theater Teacher
GENERAL INFORMATION

POSITION SUMMARY

 


The technical director works collaboratively with other theatre and fine arts faculty and staff to educate students in all areas of technical theatre and supervise the design and implementation of all production needs for theatre department productions. Additionally, the technical director serves as production manager for all Lynchburg City Schools events in the Heritage High School auditorium, working with school administration and the venue rental coordinator to ensure safe and appropriate use of the facility.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
 

  • Teaches 3-4 classes daily in the areas of General Theatre Knowledge, Stagecraft, and Design and Production.

  • Creates and implements classroom content aligned with VA Standards of Learning in technical theatre.

  • Creates and implements lesson plans aligned with district and school guidelines.

  • Monitors student progress and assess student learning in all areas of instruction.

  • Attends all required school faculty meetings, professional development sessions, etc

  • Collaborate with other theatre faculty and guest directors to envision and create Scenic, Lighting, Costume, Sound, and occasionally Projection Designs.

  • Works, as needed, with student designers in a mentorship capacity.

  • Factors in practical limitations including time, budget, and workforce availability, and collaborate with other production staff to alter designs accordingly.

  • Creates and oversees budgeting and scheduling from a technical production standpoint.

  • Trains and supervises students and parent volunteers in the safe and appropriate implementation of all production elements.

  • Schedules and supervises all extracurricular production work, including set building and painting, light hang and focus, and all technical and dress rehearsals.

  • Be on call for all performances to ensure the safety of student performers, workers and audience members.

  • Be the first in and last out for extracurricular production activities as well as performances, opening and subsequently securing the theater facilities as appropriate.

  • Maintains all shops and performance facilities and the equipment and supplies therein

  • Production Manager of EC Glass Civic Auditorium for Lynchburg City Schools Events

  • Works with venue rental manager on scheduling of events.

  • Alerts venue rental manager to maintenance and facility needs.

  • Collaborates with facility managers and custodians for external events in the auditorium to ensure that the facility is properly re-set between events.

  • Be the first in and last out for LCS events in the auditorium, opening and subsequently securing the theater facilities as appropriate.

  • Be on call for all school system events, including speakers and performances to ensure the safety of student performers, workers and audience members. These events may occur during the school day or on evenings and weekends.

  • Supervises any additional labor required for school system events.

  • Collaborates with users to coordinate lighting, sound, projection and rigging needs for school system events.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
 

  • BA or BFA in technical theatre or equivalent professional experience. Experience in theatre education preferred. The position requires a K-12 Theatre Arts License in Virginia or willingness to work towards certification on a provisional basis.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
 

  • The technical director should be proficient in the following areas: Classroom Teaching, including both lecturing and hands-on application General Theatre Knowledge

  • Theatre Safety and Organization of Shops and Performance Venues Scenic Design and Construction (carpentry and potentially metal work) Lighting Design and Implementation

  • Sound Design and Implementation Costume Design and Implementation

  • Basic Projection Design and Implementation Scenic Painting

  • Theatrical Rigging, including the safe use of single purchase counterweight systems. Production Management and Stage Management

  • Hand and Computer Drafting (Vectorworks, AutoCAD, etc.) Budget Management and Procurement of Supplies Scheduling and Workforce Management
