Job Description

Heavy Truck Mechanic

 

Position Overview:

We are seeking a skilled and experienced Heavy Duty Diesel Truck Mechanic to join our team. The ideal candidate will work with our large fleet of tri-axle dump trucks and heavy haul tractors, and be responsible for ensuring all vehicles are well-maintained, safe, and compliant with DOT regulations. This role requires an organized, detail-oriented professional with expertise in diesel mechanics, diagnostics, brakes, air systems, and electrical systems.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Preventive Maintenance (PM): Perform scheduled PM maintenance on diesel trucks and tractors, ensuring all components are in optimal working condition to prevent unexpected breakdowns.

DOT Inspections: Conduct regular Department of Transportation (DOT) inspections on all vehicles, ensuring compliance with state and federal regulations.

Routine Inspections: Carry out routine inspections on trucks, addressing any issues proactively to maintain operational efficiency.

Review Pre and Post Trip Inspections: Evaluate driver pre- and post-trip walk-around inspections, addressing reported issues and documenting actions taken.

Diagnostics and Troubleshooting: Use diagnostic tools and equipment to identify and resolve mechanical, air, and electrical issues efficiently and accurately.

Brake and Air System Repairs: Conduct inspections, repairs, and maintenance on brake and air systems to ensure safe and compliant operations.

Electrical Systems: Diagnose and repair electrical systems, including lights, wiring, batteries, and other components.

Record-Keeping: Document all maintenance and repair activities in the company’s maintenance system.

Safety and Compliance: Ensure all work meets company safety standards and regulatory requirements.

 

Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; technical training in diesel mechanics preferred.

At least 3 years of experience as a diesel mechanic, preferably with tri-axle dump trucks and heavy haul tractors.

Knowledge of DOT regulations, brake and air systems, electrical systems, and diesel engine diagnostics.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Valid driver’s license; CDL is a plus.

 

Physical Requirements:

Ability to lift 50 pounds regularly and perform physically demanding tasks.

Standing, bending, and kneeling for extended periods in various weather conditions.
