Job Description

The Coordinator of Public Programs provides administrative and operational support to the Public Programming department. The Coordinator will be expected to oversee part-time staff and volunteers, schedule weekly shifts, create daily schedules for the team, and train various aspects of the department. They must demonstrate excellent customer service skills and train the part-time team to do the same. The role requires a high level of flexibility, puzzle solving, initiative, and general leadership skills to ensure that the team operates at high level and delivers exceptional educational programming with the Orlando Science Center. 

 Essential Functions

  • Supervise the part-time Public Programming team including floor supervision, leading meetings, trainings, and performance reviews.
  • Coordinate the shift schedule for the Public Programming team on a weekly basis
  • Create daily task schedules for each team member
  • Develop and improve training structures such as new hire training and customer service training. 
  • Perform regular evaluations on live programs and demonstrations.
  • Coordinate supply orders including purchasing and sorting of incoming supplies. 
  • Demonstrate a high level of proficiency in presenting on stage, facilitating in exhibit halls, and leading various lab-like spaces. 
  • Work with a high degree of independence on multiple projects in parallel.
  • Demonstrate exemplary written and oral communication skills.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned. 


 Minimum Qualifications
 

  • Education: Degree seeking or hold a bachelor’s degree in science education, chemistry, physical science, physics, astronomy, or museum studies. 
  • Experience & Certifications: Employee must have a valid driver's license, maintain an acceptable driving record as stipulated by OSC’s insurance carrier, and have access to reliable, legal transportation that can be driven on behalf of OSC for business purposes.
  • Administrative or management experience.
  • Experience developing and maintaining shift schedules.
  • Proficiency with the Microsoft 365 ecosystem.

 Preferred Qualifications

  • Background in customer service, especially in a flexible working environment.
  • Experience performing improv or any theater experience.
  • General love and knowledge of science and a strong desire to learn new scientific information. 
  • Experience developing curriculum for informal education facilities.
  • Graphic design experience and/or proficiency in Canva.
  • Knowledge of sound boards and light boards within a theater environment. 


 Supervisory Responsibility

This position is directly responsible for the hiring, training, and development part time, seasonal staff members, interns, and volunteers. 

 Physical Demands

  • Ability to remain in a stationary position.  
  • Moves throughout the museum.   
  • Ascends/descends stairs throughout the museum. 
  • Ascends/descends ladders or other equipment to perform various tasks. 
  • Observes and reacts to the needs of guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners. 
  • Communicates and exchanges accurate information with guests, staff, volunteers, and community partners in a variety of formats including in-person, electronically, and over the phone. 
  • Operates a computer and/or office equipment efficiently and accurately.
  • Close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to focus.
  • Understand and distinguish speech and other sounds (machinery, alarms, equipment).
  • Manipulates and moves components weighing up to 25 pounds, including those that may be low to the ground or above eye level. 
  • Frequently works in outdoor environments. 
  • Rarely works in indoor environments.
  • Coping with demands and stresses associated with job and work environment.

 Expected Hours of Work & Travel

  • This position is full time and primarily works 3 days during the week and 2 weekend days.
  • This position must be able to work weekends and after hour events as needed. 
  • This position may need to alter primary workdays during school break weeks, especially in the summer.
  • Travel throughout the Central Florida area will be required to pick up supplies and program materials.  

 Telecommuting
This position is required to be onsite 100% of the time.
