TITLE: High School Head Coach
REPORTS TO: Assistant Principal of Athletics/Activities and/or Building Principal
BARGAINING UNIT: Central Valley Coaches Association (CVCA)
GENERAL SUMMARY
The Head Coach is responsible for leading and supervising all aspects of the assigned sport program. This
includes but is not limited to: athlete eligibility, practice planning, staff coordination, equipment management,
transportation, safety, adherence to WIAA regulations, and cultivating a positive and inclusive culture that
reflects district values of sportsmanship, leadership, and excellence.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
1. Plan, organize, and direct all facets of the sport program including contests, practices, and related activities.
2. Promote leadership, sportsmanship, and high expectations for student-athletes and staff.
3. Supervise and evaluate assistant coaches in alignment with district and CVCA practices.
4. Maintain accurate practice logs and submit plans to the Athletic Director as required.
5. Manage equipment distribution, collection, inventory, and recommend new purchases.
6. Monitor academic eligibility and character development in partnership with school personnel.
7. Ensure proper medical/emergency documentation and access at all practices and events.
8. Coordinate all transportation needs in collaboration with the building athletic office.
9. Clearly communicate and apply the school’s athletic awards policy.
10. Plan and participate in athlete recognition events in coordination with the AD.
11. Prepare fields and facilities as needed or coordinate with facilities staff when applicable.
12. Conduct regular program staff meetings.
13. Attend all league and WIAA meetings as required, including pre- and post-season sessions.
14. Adhere to all WIAA, league, and district rules and guidelines.
15. Complete and maintain all mandatory certifications (WIAA coaching standards, CPR, First Aid, bloodborne
pathogens, Vector training, etc.).
16. Submit required reports and documentation via FinalForms, including athlete eligibility and training records.
17. Ensure compliance with Title IX and district expectations for equity and access.
18. Maintain all district and WIAA training certifications annually.
19. Foster positive communication with parents, students, staff, and the community.
20. Uphold the district’s Honor Code, Coaching Code of Conduct, and safety procedures.
21. Saturday practices may be necessary to meet the needs of the program.
22. Other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.
REQUIREMENTS & CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT
• Must pass a criminal background check at the candidate’s expense as a condition of employment.
• Maintain current First Aid and CPR certification.

• Completion of all WIAA-required coaching trainings and certifications.
• Use and maintain athlete and program documentation through FinalForms.
• Compliance with all district, CVCA, and WIAA procedures.
• Adherence to scheduling, supervision, and extended season expectations outlined in the CVCA Agreement.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Must possess the physical stamina and mobility necessary to coach effectively and respond to athletic
emergencies.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Previous coaching experience preferred.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Knowledge of WIAA and district regulations.
• Ability to lead and model integrity, inclusion, and sportsmanship.
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and develop assistant coaches.
