JOB PURPOSE:
The Mechatronics Engineer I will work under the close supervision of the VP of Engineering and collaborate with project managers, field service, sales, construction, and production personnel to develop and optimize automated systems and equipment. This position assists in design, development, implementation, and analysis of mechanical, electrical, and control systems to support Fulghum’s forest product equipment installations, components, and systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs standard computations or analysis on mechanical, electrical, and control system designs
• Prepares calculations, schematics, and drawings for equipment assemblies, automation systems, sensors, actuators, and control panels supporting heavy industrial equipment and facilities
• Works directly with Engineering, Manufacturing, Construction and Field Service to resolve issues with new and existing equipment
• Collects data, field measurements, and operational requirements relating to equipment and system design
• Applies a detail-oriented approach to design, drawing accuracy, including BOM creation, and data entry of requisitions
• Conducts site visits to gather data, verify design conditions, troubleshoot, and ensure compliance with design intent
• Applies standard and prescribed techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform assigned tasks as part of a broader assignment or project
• Assists in preparing project documentation, testing plans, CAD and electrical schematics, and control system programming
• Builds professional skills through continued training, education, and networking events
• Works independently or within a team to design and detail assemblies from general verbal instructions, sketches, or existing models
• Assists in technical writing for Operation, Maintenance, and Safety manuals of the equipment
QUALIFICATIONS AND WORK EXPERIENCE:
• B.S. Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Automation Engineering from an accredited US college or university
• Completion of a mechatronics, electrical or automation engineering internship or co-op preferred
• Basic knowledge of mechatronics principles, including mechanical design, electrical circuits, sensors/actuators, and control systems
• Basic knowledge in SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and/or electrical schematic software
• General knowledge in general purpose programming software such as MATLAB, C++, Python, or similar
• Basic knowledge of PLC programming preferred
• Understanding of product data management (PDM) or other electronic document control systems
• Familiarity with industrial automation, robotics, and manufacturing practices
• Possess basic communications skills, both verbal and written
• Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
