What you’ll do


Reporting to the Principal Drill & Blast, you will provide technical and operational support for Drill & Blast across Thiess. You will work collaboratively with project teams, senior operational leaders, pre‑contracts, clients, and external partners to deliver technically robust, safe and cost‑effective blasting solutions.


You will also provide mentoring to project D&B engineers, graduates and our India Hub, raising technical capability across the business.


Regular domestic travel is required for this position.


Key Responsibilities



  • Provide expert technical and operational input across Thiess projects, delivering safe, efficient and optimised drill and blast design and execution.

  • Provide technical review and input for drill and blast governance, standards, guidelines, and technical assurance activities including OSE audits and risk mitigation strategies as required.

  • Embed health, safety and environmental leadership into all drill and blast solutions, ensuring compliance with Thiess HSE policies and site‑specific requirements.

  • Analyse mining operations as integrated systems to identify critical value drivers and maximise outcomes for both Thiess and our clients.

  • Support tendering and pre‑contracts activities through technical input on drill and blast design assumptions, risk, performance and cost drivers.

  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives in drill and blast practices, leveraging data, benchmarking, technology and structured improvement methodologies.

  • Provide coaching, mentoring and capability development to drill and blast engineers and graduates, strengthening technical depth across the business.


What you’ll bring


You will bring deep technical expertise and extensive operational experience in drill and blast, underpinned by strong relationship building capability and a continuous improvement mindset. With a proven track record of delivering high‑impact drill and blast solutions across complex mining operations, you will combine technical rigour with the ability to influence, mentor and partner effectively with a broad range of stakeholders to deliver safe, innovative and value‑driven outcomes.



  • Tertiary qualification in Mining Engineering, Civil Engineering or a related discipline, with 7+ years’ experience in mine engineering roles including significant operational and technical drill and blast experience.

  • Demonstrated success delivering drill and blast designs, studies and optimisation programs at scale using industry‑standard software, data analysis and reporting tools.

  • Deep technical capability across drill and blast design, safety, efficiency and risk management, with strong understanding of mine planning, geology, GIS and mining operations.

  • A strong continuous improvement mindset, with a track record of leading initiatives that deliver measurable safety, productivity and cost benefits.

  • Highly effective communicator and relationship builder, able to influence senior leaders, clients, regulators and technical teams through clear, credible and professional engagement.
